Texas Fiddle Collection was recorded in the mid-'70s and features former Texas Playboys fiddler extraordinaire Johnny Gimble. These 28 tunes are timeless in both style and execution, especially with a band consisting of the finest caliber western swing musicians including former Texas Playboys guitarist Eldon Shamblin and, from the Texas Wanderers, Cliff Bruner on electric fiddle! Among the highlights include "Sallie Gooden," "Goodnight Waltz," "Redwing," "Lime Rock," "Draggin' the Bow," "Beaumont Rag," "Fat Boy Rag," and "Dreamy Eyes Waltz." One thing to keep in mind regarding this collection is some of these tunes are not full performances; a few clock in under two minutes. ~ Al Campbell

| | Bobby Mitchell I'm Gonna Be A Wheel Someday CDs (1997) (Import) Import; Boxed Set; Germany
Texas Fiddle Collection
$64.89 The only earthly reason for making this two-CD set an oversized box, as opposed to a small double jewel box, was so that the booklet could accommodate the notes and photos -- but it adds nothing to the retail cost, and the booklet is pretty cool. The 47 tracks here cover Mitchell's entire recording career through 1964, on the Imperial, Sho-Biz, Ron, and Rip labels, all in surprisingly consistent sound given the age and varied sources of the recordings. The early tracks, Mitchell and the Toppers' first sessions from 1953, are a little crude, as was typical of R&B from this era -- though the singing and playing overcome this inherent difficulty. By the time of their 1954 sessions, the group and their recordings are rather more sophisticated, and Mitchell's vocals are more confident as well. Disc Two covers the second half of Mitchell's career with Imperial, including the classic "I'm Gonna Be a Wheel Someday." ...

| | Freezepop Fancy Ultra'Fresh CD (2004)
Texas Fiddle Collection
$11.09 If Gerry House is country's answer to Spinal Tap and Aqua is the Spinal Tap of Europop, Freezepop may very well be the Spinal Tap of '80s-style synth pop and new wave. Of course, being described as a synth pop/new wave equivalent of Spinal Tap isn't necessarily what Freezepop is aiming for on Fancy Ultra Fresh; in various interviews, the Bostonians have downplayed the strong '80s influences in their wildly infectious music. But on Fancy Ultra Fresh, Freezepop has so much fun with synth pop and new wave stereotypes that you can't help but see this 2004 release as an affectionate celebration of the wackier side of Ronald Reagan/Margaret Thatcher-era pop culture. Comparisons to '80s favorites like the Human League, Soft Cell, Berlin, Duran Duran, and Thomas Dolby are unavoidable, and it would be a mistake to think that Freezepop's three members are merely good at what they do: they're great at ...

| | Adam Zwig Pictures Of The Gone America CD (2004)
Texas Fiddle Collection
$17.75 Adam Zwig, song-smith, musician, psychotherapist and author, was the originator, main song-writer and lead guitarist for Shapeshifter. From 1997-2002 Zwig and Shapeshifter toured the country, scored the radio hit, "My Enemy" and produced an award winning video. They entered the Album Networks' Best Sellers category for CD sales in the Northwest and garnered amazing press reviews where ever they went. Shapeshifter graced the front page of Napster and at one point "My Enemy" was the most downloaded song. Their song "Numb" was on NBC's "Just Deal" for five years. With Shapeshifter, Zwig released 4 albums on Pinch Hit Records in L. A., as well as being on compilation CD's with such notables as Cyress Hill, Elliot Smith and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. In 2002, Zwig decided to go solo and delve back into his blues and folk roots. At the time, Zwig said, "Playing in a modern rock band is a great experience, has a tribal element to it. You feel like you're in a gang and your taking on the world. But I had always been drawn to the old stuff -- real singer / songwriters that meant business, sang like professional criminals, make you want to drive your car over a cliff, deadly serious, more than just light entertainment, a guide into an altered consciousness of reality, stuff that gave you more of the big picture. Nothing commercial like we were doing. Nothing easy going or just giving the impression of heaviness but without any insight. ...
