Built to Destroy was not much different than MSG's previous effort, Assault Attack, except that Gary Barden replaced Graham Bonnet on lead vocals. Michael Schenker's steady musicianship usually lifted his sometimes mediocre solo efforts into at least the listenable range. But other than "Rock My Nights Away" and the instrumental "Nemo," most of the songs on this album sound like standard '80s fare: upbeat, keyboard-laced pop-metal songs with inspirationally banal lyrics that would fit nicely on a movie soundtrack. The U.K. version on BGO Records and the U.S. one on Chrysalis are supposed to have alternate mixes, but the difference is imperceptible. The easier to find American release has a shuffled song order and "Rock Will Never Die" instead of the power ballad "Walk the Stage." Built to Destroy, while average, was still much better than UFO albums from the same period, proving that Schenker was really the guiding force behind his former band. Nonetheless, this release is for fans of the genre or Schenker completists only. ~ Brian Downing

The question on the minds of most Michael Schenker fans is usually this -- when will he ever finally get his due? Apparently, the German axeman is practically the Rodney Dangerfield of metal. He's somehow managed to anchor two of the most important bands in the lineage of the genre and influence everyone from Metallica to Powerman 5000, and yet, while he continues have a rabid fan base writhing away in the shadows and is still widely recognized in countries like Japan where technical prowess is highly prized, he remains relatively unknown to American audiences. It is perhaps not fair that his clones have outsold him many times over and enjoy popular positions on the mantle place of rock & roll, but then again, if influence translated into acclaim, wouldn't so many countless others from Phil Ochs to Nick Drake or even Big Star be better off as well? In any case, though Schenker's ...

Built To Destroy CD music
$9.95 This reissue of rocker Michael Schenker Group's 1981 release MSG is digitally remastered and features the tracks "Armed And Ready" and "Cry For The Nations."
After his lengthy stints with the Scorpions and UFO, Michael Schenker could be forgiven for indulging his incendiary fretboard skills throughout the entirety of this 1980 solo debut. Instead, it's a solid group effort that has aged surprisingly well, with Schenker artfully deploying his talents on full-bodied hard rock outings such as the opening "Armed and Ready" and the riff-heavy "Victim of Illusion." Vocalist Gary Barden proves himself more than able to withstand Schenker's pyrotechnics, ...

| | James Labrie Elements Of Persuasion CD (2005)
Built To Destroy album
$15.05 Clichés have a way of being overused, but some of them are so darn accurate that it's hard not to come back to them again and again. One such cliché is, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." That cliché applies to politics and economics, and it most certainly applies to music; James LaBrie's third solo project, Elements of Persuasion, is a perfect example. This 2005 release worships, cherishes and adores rock's past without being totally enslaved by it, and like a lot of the neo-soulsters who have managed to link the '60s and '70s with the '90s and 2000s (Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, among others), LaBrie has no problem drawing on different eras for inspiration. But the Dream Theater vocalist has nothing to do with R&B; his turf is hard rock, metal and progressive rock, and Elements of Persuasion is an album with both pre-Nevermind and post-Nevermind components. There is no getting around the abundance of '70s and '80s influences that assert themselves on this disc -- influences ranging from Ronnie James Dio, Judas Priest and Queensrÿche to the elaborate progressive rock of Yes, Kansas and Rush. But instead of being totally retro, Elements of Persuasion also draws on the chug-chug riffs and downtuned guitars of alternative rock metal, grunge and post-grunge; this is a CD that can make you think of Geddy Lee or Rob Halford one minute, and Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, ...
