This definitely isn't your standard album. Hutchings' intent was to create an audio documentary, the "Rattlebone" being about the Border (Scots border, that is) Morris dancing tradition, while "Ploughjack" covers the considerably more obscure Molly dancing of eastern England. A mix of music played by some of the usual suspects of the '70s British folk-rock axis (although only Hutchings is credited) and historical recordings like a turn-of-the-century cylinder recording of fiddler John Locke. What it boils down to is an interesting perspective on these uniquely English traditions. It's not easy listening, since the pieces are short, jumping between tunes and spoken word (which includes a quote from "Piers Plowman," one of the seminal works of English literature), as well as Puritan documents decrying the dancing, or a 1933 account of Molly dancing. The best way to think of this is as radio for your CD player, and enjoy it as a portrait of something that, if not utterly dead yet, is on life support -- for better or worse. It probably won't get you dancing, but it will certainly keep your attention. ~ Chris Nickson Rattlebone & Ploughjack Music Ashley Hutchings Rattlebone & Ploughjack Songs | 1. | Rattlebone |

Rattlebone & Ploughjack album
$17.85 Wishfulness Waltz is a reissue of the 1997 Fairport Convention album Who Knows Where the Time Goes?, with four bonus tracks recorded at that year's Cropredy Festival. 1997 marked the 30th year of Fairport's existence, and the band began yet another chapter in their continuing saga with a new studio album and a couple of live tracks. Enter fiddle/mandolin/guitar player and Albion Band alumnus Chris Leslie. Leslie's "John Gaudie" leads off; a mid-tempo, vintage 1973-type rocker featuring the two violin players and Leslie's dulcet tenor. Fellow fiddler Ric Sanders composed "The Bowman's Retreat" as a "welcome aboard" gesture in which each bowman gets to showcase his considerable talents along with the other members. It is debatable whether Fairport has ever rocked as blatantly as they do on "Spanish Main," which actually has Simon Nicol and Leslie trading incendiary guitar licks. Likewise, "Dangerous" ...

Rattlebone & Ploughjack CD music
$10.29 Although for the rest of his life, underinformed fans of 1990s pop will forever be calling Darius Rucker "Hootie," the former Hootie & the Blowfish singer-songwriter makes his solo debut with a perfectly credible take on mainstream contemporary Nashville country. The laid-back, largely acoustic folk-pop of Hootie & the Blowfish was never that far removed from contemporary country in the first place, so only the fact that Rucker is the first major African-American country star since the heyday of Charley Pride makes the stylistic crossover out of the ordinary. First single "Don't Think I Don't Think About It," a Top 5 hit on the Billboard country charts even prior to the album's release, makes clear how comfortable Rucker ...
| | Steve Goodman Best Of The Asylum Years, Vol. 2 CD (1989)
Rattlebone & Ploughjack music CDs
$10.39 Steve Goodman recorded five albums for Asylum Records between 1975 and 1980, and they were all out of print by 1988 when his own label, Red Pajamas Records, licensed some of the tracks for The Best of the Asylum Years, Vol. 1. (Subsequently, Red Pajamas licensed the albums themselves.) A second volume was always in the plans, and between the two discs, more than 40 percent of Goodman's Asylum output is covered. It is important to note that the best of the Asylum years is not the same thing as the best of Steve Goodman, who recorded some of his ...

| | Stackridge Man In The Bowler Hat CD (1973) England
Rattlebone & Ploughjack album
$14.35 Edsel's 1996 reissue of THE MAN IN THE BOWLER HAT adds three tracks to the original LP.
Produced by George Martin, The Man in the Bowler Hat continues Stackridge's brand of satiric rock marbled with elements of folk and to some extent, even country. The lyrics are just as witty as in their first two releases, and the poetry glistens with a jovial Englishness that became the band's most identifiable trademark. With Martin's help, though, the album became one of their better releases, as the music rises to the top before the words do, sounding fresher, livelier, and noticeably sharper than both their debut and 1972's Friendliness. Stackridge's best song, "Dangerous Bacon," was released as a single, and it's in this song as well as "The Galloping Gaucho" and "The Indifferent Hedgehog" in which their sound comes alive. The eccentric combination of Mutter Slater's flute and the playful airiness ...
