| | Joe Locascio Marionette CD Joe Locascio Discography of CDs
An '89 quartet date showcasing saxophonist Joe LoCasio, a veteran of countless West Coast studio and session dates. He's a hard-blowing, competent player, good on straight-ahead and ballad material. The only problem here is that LoCasio and mates are playing their hearts out on generic, bland material that lacks punch and distinction. ~ Ron Wynn
keyboardist's follow up to Glider's LP, compared to Pat Metheny & Chick Corea

Marionette album
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack ...

| | Very Best Of Bert Kaempfert CD (1995)
Marionette album
$13.69 Recorded between 1960 and 1967. Includes liner notes by Steve Kolanjian.
Digitally remastered by Eliot Goshman (1995, Taragon Studios, Deer Park, New York).
Beginning with Louis Armstrong, through Harry James and Bobby Hackett of the Jackie Gleason Orchestra, the trumpet was once a king in pop music. This was true even in '60s-era easy listening, as demonstrated by the success of Al Hirt, Herb Alpert, and the ultra-shrewd German musician Bert Kaempfert, who probably was ...

| | Miles Davis On The Corner CD (1972) Remastered
Marionette songs
$6.49 ON THE CORNER enjoys a special cult status among musicians, anticipating as it does the punk funk/acid jazz movements. For Miles Davis, ON THE CORNER was another seismic shift. Miles was particularly fond of the lyric sweep of Hendrixian electric guitar, the James Brown-like rhythmic thump of Fender bass, and the bell-like timbre and chordal possibilities of the Fender/Rhodes electric piano. Now the trumpeter sought to incorporate the feel of street rhythms from around the world and to reflect the influence of ...
| | Benny Golson One Day Forever CD (2001)
Marionette album
$10.55 Principally recorded between November 6, 1996 and October 11, 2000. Includes liner notes by Bob Karcy and Benny Golson.
Benny Golson has made many excellent recordings over the decades, but One Day, Forever is in a class by itself. Golson was inspired to write the striking title track following the death of Art Farmer's wife Mechthilde, and he later added a poignant lyric. Shirley Horn's exquisite vocal on this lush ballad is backed by a string section of 12 cellos plus a flute and a pair of French horns conducted by the leader; it also includes Golson's soulful tenor sax and a first-rate rhythm section of Mulgrew Miller, Ron Carter, and Carl Allen. Probably to achieve the exact sound Golson had in mind, Farmer temporarily sets down the flumpet (a custom-made hybrid of the trumpet and flügelhorn that he played almost exclusively from 1992 until his death) and adds his trumpet to six tracks, including the snappy "Blue ...
| | Sons Of The San Joaquin Sing One For The Cowboy CD (2000)
Marionette CD music
$13.49 The Sons of the San Joaquin aren't real cowboys; they don't even play real cowboys on TV. But they do know a thing or two about the cowboy song. Jack Hannah, Joe Hannah, and Lon Hannah craft a lonesome sound that harks back to the Sons of the Pioneers and other Hollywood rough riders from the '30s and '40s. The Sons of the San Joaquin aren't just a nostalgia act, though. Most of their songs have been written by Jack Hannah, who effortlessly captures the classic ...
| | Doc Powell Cool Like That CD (2004)
Marionette music CDs
$15.65 The veteran R&B sideman and popular smooth jazz guitarist usually lets his listeners know the vibe based on his album titles, from the Grover Washington, Jr.-influenced blues-soul of Inner City Blues to his most popular, Laid Back. On his critically acclaimed Heads Up debut, 97th and Columbus, the native New Yorker -- who titled the disc after the location of the classic Manhattan club Mikell's, where he did some serious shedding in the '80s -- paid homage to his eclectic roots, fashioning a tribute to, among others, chief influences Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Chet Atkins, and Ramsey Lewis. Focusing ...
| | Yesterdays New Quintet Sound Directions CD (2005)
Marionette songs
$14.05 Madlib's Sound Directions project follows in the footsteps of Yesterdays New Quintet by presenting a small group of jazz players (most, if not all of them, Otis Jackson himself) loosely playing a down-home and funky brand of jazz music perfectly suited for a hip lounge. The Funky Side of Life is heavy on the covers -- not standards -- and that makes a big difference. (Jackson usually just needs a good riff to cover his vamping style of keyboards, and this roster of tracks services his needs perfectly.) The first non-original comes straight out of left field; "Wanda Vidal," originally by the extraordinarily gifted Brazilian Marcos Valle, is the perfect type of light and loungey tune that Jackson can run rings around. The rest are nearly as obscure, including Billy Brooks' "Forty Days" (although A Tribe Called Quest fans will recognize the hook), Oliver Sain's "On the Hill," ...
