| | Julie Kelly Some Other Time CD Julie Kelly Discography of CDs
At first Julie Kelly's voice may sound a bit jarring to some, but her singing on this CD will win most listeners over. Kelly slides between notes, sometimes speaks part of the lyrics (as on "Some Other Time"), and she takes chances, especially harmonically. Her repertoire on this Chase CD is filled with unusual choices, such as two obscure Chick Corea tunes ("Highwire" and "Sounds"), Stevie Wonder's "Part Time Lover," Dave Grusin's "Bahia," and Nat Adderley's underrated classic "The Old Country." Assisted by strong support from a rhythm section led by pianist Tom Garvin and occasional solos from trumpeter Chris Botti and the reeds of Bob Franceschini, this is Julie Kelly's most intriguing and consistent recording. ~ Scott Yanow
songstress Kelly is joined by keyboardist Tom Garvin, w. special guest appearance by Gene Bertoncini

Some Other Time songs
$22.05 England's Proper label issued this 100-track attempt to sum up the state of black harmony groups between 1940 and 1952. Though there's a lot of incredible music from the era, this four-disc set overly concentrates on slow ballads instead of up-tempo numbers. The first disc, "Digging the Roots," begins right where it should, with tracks by the forefathers of doo wop: the Mills Brothers and the Ink Spots. Unfortunately, instead of a swinging track like "Tiger Rag" or even "The Glow Worm," The Dawn of Doo-Wop programs the Mills Brothers' "Paper Doll" and "You Always Hurt the One You Love" and the Ink Spots' "When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano." Following hot on their heels are a variety of groups influenced by either (or both) of the above, including ...
| | Ramsey Lewis & Nancy Wilson Simple Pleasures CD (2003)
Some Other Time album
$11.79 Longtime fans of these two jazz legends may know that they met originally in the early '60s as clients of the same manager; and recorded their first duet album in 1984, Two of Us, which was produced by Stanley Clarke. Based on the wonderful piano-vocal rapport (with brilliant horn arrangements courtesy of Llew Matthews) on this disc and 2002's Meant To Be, it's a good thing that Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson caught up with each other in 2001, when Wilson played the Ravinia Festival (Lewis serves as Artistic Director). Simple Pleasures features both vocals and instrumentals with a wide range of dynamics, from ...

$16.19 Considering the stunning array of jazz fusion talent that legendary composer and keyboardist Joe Zawinul has employed as leader of the pioneering Weather Report and his ever-evolving Zawinul Syndicate, our expectations should be raised when he says of his current multi-national lineup, "It's the best band I've ever had." Recorded at his Birdland Club in his hometown of Vienna over two engagements in 2003, this explosive, multi-faceted disc is a wonderful showcase for the largely African-leaning sounds of the current ...
