keyboardist, composer & piano steps out front w. a eclectic program of 10 originals and 2 standards
Personnel: Mike Garson (piano, synthesizer, programming); Craig Fall, Craig Gall (electric guitar); Gregg Gottlieb (cello); Eric Marienthal (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Reggie Hamilton (electric bass, bass guitar); Joe Taylor , Joel Taylor (drums); Steve Reid (percussion). Recording information: Los Angeles, CA (04/1990). Illustrator: Ron Pastucha. Photographer: Gerard Burkhart. Arrangers: Brad Vinikow; Mike Garson. Keyboardist Mike Garson has proven through the years (on his own projects and in his work with Free Flight) that he is a masterful and highly versatile jazz musician. However this CD has only a few months of interest to jazz listeners, chiefly a loose and lighthearted "Brooklyn Blues" (which features an unusual trio consisting of Garson, altoist Eric Marienthal and cellist Greg Gottlieb) and a relatively straightahead duet with bassist Brian Bromberg on "Without a Song." Otherwise the release is comprised mainly of new agey ballads (tunes that set a mood but contain little development or depth) and a few upbeat pop originals. Garson is capable of much better. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Faces Nod Is As Good As A Wink... To A Blind Horse CD (1971)
Mystery Man
$6.45 Faces: Ron Wood (vocals, guitar); Rod Stewart (vocals); Ian McLagan (keyboards); Ronnie Lane (bass instrument); Kenny Jones (drums). Personnel: Ronnie Wood (guitar); Kenney Jones (drums). The Faces' third album, A Nod Is as Good as a Wink...to a Blind Horse, finally gave the group their long-awaited hit single in "Stay with Me," helping send the album into the Billboard Top Ten, which is certainly a testament to both the song and the album, but it's hard to separate its success from that of Rod Stewart's sudden solo stardom. In the mere months that separated Long Player ...

$6.45 Live Recording
Faces: Rod Stewart (vocals); Ronnie Lane (bass instrument); Kenny Jones (drums); Ron Wood (background vocals); Ian McLagan. Personnel: Ron Wood (guitar); Ian McLagan (keyboards); Kenney Jones (drums). Recording information: Olympic Studios, London, England. It wasn't all over but the shouting, but the Faces sure weren't thriving when they released their last album, Ooh La La, in 1973. The problem, of course, was Rod Stewart, who had turned into a superstar, causing innumerable tensions within the band. He had yet to decamp to America, had yet to turn to pop ...

| | Martin Taylor Best Of CD (Import) Japan
Mystery Man
$38.09 It would seem futile to argue with the definitiveness of a retrospective compiled by the artist himself, but the truth is that many artists are far from being the best judges of their own work. Martin Taylor did choose the 26 tracks that span this double-disc, which draws from his recordings for such labels as Columbia, Linn, The Guitar Label, and others. But although the compiler/artist would undoubtedly ...
