| | Julie Kelly Stories To Tell CD Julie Kelly Discography of CDs
This CD finds singer Julie Kelly in prime form. With the assistance of Bill Cunliffe on piano and synth, either Tom Warrington or John Clayton on bass, drummer Joe LaBarbera and several guests (guitarist Larry Koonse, tenorman Bob Sheppard, trumpeter Clay Jenkins and percussionist Brian Kilgore), Kelly creates fresh interpretations of such songs as "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," "Long Ago and Far Away," "A Sleepin' Bee" and a boppish "Royal Garden Blues." Most unusual is her transformation of "Tomorrow" (from Annie) into jazz. An excellent showcase for the talented singer, who both scats well and interprets lyrics with sensitivity. ~ Scott Yanow

$13.85 Julius Tolentino shows a lot of promise on his debut recording as a leader. He studied with fellow alto saxophonist Jackie McLean and toured for several years with the Illinois Jacquet Big Band, though he has developed a sound that is not overly influenced by anyone else on his instrument. With a fine rhythm section, ...
| | Drums & Tuba Flying Ballerina CD (1998)
Stories To Tell CD music
$17.75 Creating a musical concoction that mixes Minutemen-like arrangements with a high-school marching-band sensibility, Drums & Tuba's The Flying Ballerina is a refreshingly unique entry into the rock canon. With Neal McKeeby lassoing guitar lines around Brian Wolff's tuba as D. Boon once did with Mike Watt's basslines, images of the Minutemen are conjured through tight grooves and sharp improvisation. Still, nothing about this band is typical, as the changing tempos of the propulsive attack in "Chummus, a Challah, and a Whole Lot of Chutzpah" creates a mournful quality, which at times seems almost akin to that of a spaghetti western. Further, the guitar seizures and somewhat progressive movements of "Blazevitch" filter early Led Zeppelin-like eeriness through Captain Beefheart dissonance. Interestingly, the breakneck rendition of Charles Mingus' "Boogie Stop Shuffle" and a faithful version of the Minutemen's "God Bows to Math" show a band that is just as comfortable paying tribute to influences. Overall, much more than a novelty, Drums & Tuba make for strangely compelling listening. ~ Matt Fink
