Confounding the expectations of fans and detractors alike, the late Herman Poole "Sonny" Blount, better known to terrestrials as Sun Ra, never laid in any one groove long enough to be typecast as anything...other than as an original. Way back in the 1950s, long before anyone had coined terms like "world music," "psychedelic," "free jazz" and "fusion," Sun Ra's big bands were staging costumed epics that broke down barriers between genres, and synthesized various elements of popular culture into the modern jazz and big band vocabulary.
A virtuoso pianist deeply rooted in the conventions of stride and swing, Sun Ra anticipated and paralleled the work of other innovators such as Ahmad Jamal, Thelonious Monk, Cecil Taylor and Andrew Hill. But Sun Ra's mark of distinction was that he became the first jazz pianist to display any genuine affection for electronic keyboard instruments.
