Recorded on location at the Canyon de Chelly, Taos, New Mexico. Includes liner notes by Paul Horn and R. Carlos Nakai.
Paul Horn, one of the leading proponents of solo improvisational flute, collaborates here with Native American flute player R. Carlos Nakai in a genuinely equal pairing. As with some of Paul Horn's earlier Inside albums, this is a field recording, done in two weeks inside of Canyon De Chelly and capitalizing on its natural acoustics. Listen to "Raven Rendezvous," where Horn uses his soprano saxophone to "speak" to a raven that happened into the area. The sound of Nakai's Native American flute, echoing the natural sounds of the canyon and its water, is breathtaking on "Within the Rocks." The two of them toss ideas back and forth at times, trying out different tonalities or embellishing what the other has put forth. ~ Bob Gottlieb

Inside Canyon De Chelly
$12.65 Charlie Haden's Quartet West launched the ensemble that would become his most popular grouping throughout the '80s and '90s. Haden, who had made a name for himself as an avant-garde bassist in Ornette Coleman's band and elsewhere, including the influential Liberation Music Orchestra, returned to a bop-influenced, more mainstream sound with this grouping. While the album may not be stretching many boundaries stylistically, this format does little to dilute Haden's impressive performances, and his love for this material is made obvious with his intricate arrangements, especially on the two Ornette Coleman tunes, "The Good Life" and "The Blessing." ("The Blessing" appears ...
| | Supernatural Lost Freestyle Files CD (2003)
Inside Canyon De Chelly
$14.49 The rapper's best moments are well documented on this lengthy single-disc compilation. Even more amazing is that despite being in rap's upper echelon for two decades, this is Supernatural's debut album. As "Internationally Known" suggests, Supernatural is "the star of the show" here. The opening track also has a definite feel along the lines of 2Pac and B.I.G. as he recounts his global travels. "Work It Out," which features members of Jurassic 5 and Iriscience from Dilated Peoples, has a good groove to it as soulful Motown female harmonies are heard in the loop. The sound quality on "Victory" is rather low, but showcases how impromptu and creative the artist was in "freestyle battles." His first appearance on the radio program Bobbito & Stretch demonstrates the passion Supernatural brought to every track, especially on "A Piece of Hip Hop History, Pt. 1." Here a horn section is added before the rhyme moves into a funky backbeat. The ensuing second part of this track is another highlight, dampened only by the occasional phrase "Ladies and gentlemen, the star of the show." The give and take on "Wake Up LA!" is poorly recorded, but the spirit and verve cannot be denied. It ends in controversy though. The battle between Supernatural and Craig G has a boxing-match atmosphere on the appropriately titled "Clash of the Titans." Coming across as a battle of urban poetic gunslingers, the duo certainly entertains the audience ...
| | Punisher CD (1989) Soundtrack
Inside Canyon De Chelly
$18.05 It might seem reasonable to assume that the star-crossed 1990 film The Punisher (starring Dolph Lundgren), based on the Marvel Comics character, which did not have a soundtrack album initially, finally got one 15 years later only because the property had gained greater recognition, especially musically, after a 2004 remake (starring Tom Jane) resulted in its own gold-selling soundtrack album and a Top 20 hit, "Broken," by Seether featuring Amy Lee. But Paul Tonks, who wrote the liner notes to the belated album, and producer Robin Esterhammer, who interviewed director Mark Goldblatt and composer Dennis Dreith for 23 minutes of conversation that are appended to the disc, say nothing about that. Rather, they focus on the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the film's initial distribution. The company that made it was sold just as it was being finished, with the result that it earned theatrical release only in France, Germany, Great Britain, and Japan in 1990, but went straight to video in the U.S. in 1991. The reason the soundtrack album appeared in 2005, Goldblatt tells Esterhammer, can be found in the name of his record company, Perseverance, and Tonks also makes it sound like the album is a long-promised dream. Nevertheless, the success of the soundtrack to the remake ...
