Madagasikara 1: Current Traditional Music Of Madagascar music CDs
$9.99 BOW WOW was nominated for Best Contemporary Blues Album in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
No matter how you felt about changes that Johnny Guitar Watson made during his long career, he always tried to keep current and go with the funky flow. Bow Wow finds Watson treading on disco, funk, and early rap territory. Even though Watson produced, wrote, and arranged these sessions, it often sounds as if someone else should have been in control to help keep up the energy. Most of this material would have been more effective if a funkmeister like George Clinton could have been at the production helm, found some better material, and completely pushed Watson to simply have fun as an innovator and elder statesman to an up and coming generation primed for the kind of mischief unfortunately missing from Bow Wow. ~ Al Campbell

| | Danny O'Keefe O'Keefe CD (1972)
Madagasikara 1: Current Traditional Music Of Madagascar songs
$9.69 While 1972's O'Keefe scored singer/songwriter Danny O'Keefe his biggest hit ever with "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues," -- and continues to garner him royalty checks because of all the people who covered it (Elvis among them), the album is a classic in its own right. The single is the opening track, and it remains one of the greatest songs about desolation ever written. Produced by Arif Mardin in Memphis, it features sidemen like Buddy Emmons and Reggie Young, and also Eddie and David Brigati! Also here is "The Road," a track made infamous by Jackson Browne on Running on Empty. O'Keefe's version is a bit faster, but more subdued. It's all in his voice, not in the instrumentation, except for an acoustic guitar that plays mantra-like behind him in the longish intro; sounding like a melancholy pastoral is a bit snappy and never prepares the listener for the words. Like the sound of motion itself -- with telephone poles, the songs, the shows, and road signs slipping past into memory -- this original version is far spookier; it's every bit as dark as "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues." This is the sound of dislocation itself. The laughter and small conversations, the sights and sounds and smells, and when O'Keefe sings of "coffee in the mornings, cocaine afternoons," he sings as if it's all part of one long movie. He means it, there is no boasting in his delivery ...
| | Electric Junkyard Gamelan Live From Here CD (2007)
Madagasikara 1: Current Traditional Music Of Madagascar album
$13.19 Electric Junkyard Gamelan plays original groove driven music on invented instruments. Haunting melodies, funky bass lines and layers of danceable interlocking rhythms ride over brilliant harmonic washes. Its a refreshingly unique and original sound. The group is the brainchild of bandleader and composer Terry Dame. Born out of desire to create a totally new and original sound Dame fused her two passions, making music and inventing and building things to form this totally unique group. Originally inspired by traditional Gamelan music from Bali, today the group's music is influenced by everything from Indian classical to klezmer, rock to jazz and is shaped by the unique and humor laced voice of composer Terry Dame. They perform on Dame's innovative instruments such as the Rubarp and Big Barp (electric rubber band harps), the Sitello (an electric cello/sitar combo), the Terraphone (copper pipe horn), the Clayrimba (a three octave tuned clay pot "marimba") and an arsenal of percussion instruments fashioned from bed frames, old farm equipment, turntable platters, saw blades, and truck springs. The result is a super original sound with haunting melodies, funky bass lines and layers of danceable interlocking rhythms that ride over clashes of metal on metal and colorful harmonic washes. Audiences are transfixed by the beauty and strangeness of the unusual collection of instruments on stage and the amazing array of sounds they produce. The five musicians in EJYG hail from diverse musical backgrounds. Leader Terry Dame, a saxophonist and composer by training has studied music from around the world including Indonesia, the Middle East, the Balkans and India. She has been living and working in New York City since 1985, composing and performing for film, video, theater, dance, and concerts. She was the music director, composer and saxophonist with the seven piece global beat jazz group Monkey on a Rail from 1998-2002 and a founding member of the improvisation trio Trophy Wife . She was composer in residence and saxophonist with Jennifer Miller's New York based Circus Amok from 1994-2004 . Ms. Dame is also a member of Gamelan Dharma Swara, the traditional Balinese Gamelan based at the ...
