| | Music City Soul CD - Import (1 Customer Review)
This is Nashville soul from the mid-1960s through the early 1970s, all released on labels partly or wholly owned by Ted Jarrett: Ref-O-Ree, Spar, and Poncello. It's not often acknowledged that Nashville, known almost exclusively for its country music, also had an active black music scene, which makes this 26-track compilation archivally important. The fact still remains, though, that Nashville, and certainly these labels, did not develop an outstanding or distinctive soul style. It's easy to play spot-the-influences here, whether it's the gritty Motown of the Temptations, the smooth soul of the Northeast or the mid-tempo gospel-flecked blues-soul of Stax. In fact, Jimmy Tig's "Foolish Lover" sounds like an attempt at a mathematical fusion of "Love Is Strange" and "Stay," while Herbert Hunter's "Isn't It Wonderful to Dream" is unabashedly derivative of classic Ben E. King sides, and Thomas Henry's "Is It Love" rips a page from Major Lance's book. You're not going to recognize any of the performers, with the possible exception of the well-traveled Gene Allison, whose bluesy "It's Almost Sundown" (with a vocal delivery reminiscent of Sam Cooke) is one of the best cuts. There are some nice oddities here and there, like the Jades' moving, moody ballad "My Loss, Your Gain," and Wendell Watts' super-lush "You Girl," with its bouncy strings, rhumba-ish beat, and lounge-lizard vocals. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | AC It Just Gets Worse CD (1999)
Music City Soul
$13.39 It's kind of surprising -- and perhaps disturbing -- that Anal Cunt, aka A.C., is still recording at the end of the '90s, since one might have thought they had exhausted their basic premise. 1998's Picnic of Love was a departure into smart-assed, falsetto-sung acoustic ballads, but It Just Gets Worse is a return to the standard A.C. sound. Half the fun of any A.C. release is reading the 40 or 50-odd song titles the group comes up with for their gonzo blasts of noise, since there's always at least some inspired lowbrow humor to be found. However, It Just Gets Worse is the first time they've seemed outright stupid. Granted, that doesn't mean it's never funny -- A.C. can crack some pretty creative stupid jokes -- but the subject matter of the jokes (AIDS, Nazis, rape, homosexuals, sperm banks, pedophilia, and infanticide) pushes a lot of buttons that are very easy to push. The humor is so obviously calculated to offend that it's a pointless waste of energy to get angry about it, and even if A.C. is funnier than most bands mining this territory, it still comes off as pretty predictable. So does the music -- A.C.'s signature grind hasn't changed all that much over the years, and if you've heard one album, you pretty much know what the others sound like. It seems at this point that they've taken the joke as far as it will go. ~ Steve Huey
After Ozzy Osbourne, GWAR, and Alice Cooper -- not to mention G.G. Allin, Cannibal Corpse, and W.A.S.P's Blackie Lawless -- it's hard to imagine any rocker being more over-the-top. Anal Cunt gives it a shot on It Just Gets Worse, a grindcore/hardcore punk CD consisting of 39 tracks (all of them short bursts of amelodic noise) that go out of their way to be as offensive, crude, profane, and vulgar as possible. When you see titles like "You're Pregnant, So I Kicked You in the Stomach," "I Lit Your Baby on Fire," and "Sweatshops Are Cool," you know that this album is about shock value for the sake of shock value. As gross and repulsive as AC's lyrics are, however, they come across as very tongue-in-cheek and shouldn't be taken seriously. Possibly, this CD could be viewed as a revolt against political correctness -- that is, assuming that it bears any serious ...

$14.35 On REVOLVERLUTION, Public Enemy remains defiant, still bum-rushing the hip-hop underground 15 years after breaking out as one of the most socially and politically outspoken rap acts in the genre's short history. These hip-hoppers with a mission have consistently held the mainstream in a headlock until it took notice. As the concentric nature of fate would have it, P.E. still sets the standard for the independent rap game (now signed with Koch, also home to KRS-ONE). Their first release since 1999's THERE'S A POISON GOIN' ON involves a virtual community ...
