Embodying much of the laid-back characteristics of Southern rock, Southern rap is making its presence known as another flavor on the rap pallette. East Point, Georgia's Outkast is mixing their down-home ease with the smooth stylings of their soul forefathers.
It must be a Southern thing; the beats and raps are casual and comfortable, but not to say that the groove isn't there. Much like Isaac Hayes' vocal sleekness, Outkast's Dre (Andre Benjamin) and Big Boi (Antwan Patton) finesse their way through the pumping beats of "Call Of The Wild" to the soulful croonings on their number one single, "Player's Ball," which topped the R&B charts for six weeks.
Produced by Organized Noize, an Atlanta-area production team, Outkast's debut simmers with a sense of world-weary restraint. From their choice to use the moniker Outkast, to the difficulties of avoiding oppression and the potential alienation of actually becoming a success, Outkast's debut shows definite potential for the Atlanta-area teenagers, and possible further success will bring satisfaction, not alienation.

This album is a "classic". It's classic Outkast at it's finest. In 1994 I heard Players Ball on the radio, and soon after I picked this album up. Outkast has been my favorite rap group ever since. I was in high school at that time, I let all my friends listen to it, they got hooked. I bumped this album at parties all the time and had many a good times listening to this. It holds a special place with me, it always will. I've stuck by Outkast even with all the drastic changes with the last 2 albums. I mainly listen to the first 4 albums. Aquemini is a close 2nd to this album. Ain't No Thing, Players Ball, Hootie Hoo, Git Up, Git Out, Crumblin' Erb, etc. All classic Outkast. Definitely pick this one up if you haven't, because you're missin' out on Outkast's roots, which was real 90's rap.

One of the best albums ever. Their style is about as unique as it can get. Nobody can hate on these dudes. Crumblin' Herb and myintroletuknow are just perfect.

Perfect example of dictating what is hip hop and not letting hip hop dictate what you are. This album is not only one of the greatest on wax, but defined a whole generation and genre.
