| | Chris Young Man I Want To Be CD (2009)
Rachmaninov: Symphonic Dances & The Isle Of The Dead
$9.09 Since Chris Young appeared on the "Nashville Star" television program in 2006, he's been on a roll. After signing with RCA he had a hit with "Drinkin' Me Lonely," his first single from his self-titled debut recording. Likewise, the two singles that have preceded the release of THE MAN I WANT TO BE in 2009 haven't done too badly either, getting plenty of play on radio. While Chris Young's sound is firmly in the contemporary country camp, it's also a lot more hardcore honkytonk than it is the refried '70s rock clichés that plague the genre. Part of that is due to his big booming baritone voice that rings as clear as a bell in this mix. (Think George Strait-meets-Josh Turner.) The other part of his appeal is the use of a relatively small group of musicians, giving the disc a more organic sound than a lot of what's out there. Young also has a lot of respect for tradition: "Rose in Paradise" is drenched in fiddles, mandolins, and acoustic guitars. It's a country-styled blues and features no less than Willie Nelson as a duet partner. The final track on the set is a moving cover of Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night in Georgia." Its beauty lies in its arrangement; his reading of this classic ballad is utterly tender and believable, accentuanted by a sparse, stripped-down production. And rather than stick with his trademark baritone, he stretches his vocal range--including a mean falsetto--to the brink and still pulls it all off.

| | Stanley Black All-Time Top Tangos/Spain CD (2004) (Import)
Rachmaninov: Symphonic Dances & The Isle Of The Dead
$18.89 Stanley Black's orchestral fantasies touch upon Argentina and Andalusia in this double reissue of dramatically produced concept albums from the golden age of thematically presented mood music. What makes both All-Time Top Tangos and Spain much more substantial and interesting than his Red Velvet and Music for Romance albums is the inclusion of authentic instrumentation and traditional vocalizing. The tango stratum is dominated by accordion and brass; the Spanish studies bring in flamenco guitar & vocals along with bursts of conversation in the mother tongue. All of these elements keep the string orchestra at bay. As if to gild the picturesque landscape, Black finishes off with a full-blown suite of themes from Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. ~ arwulf arwulf

Rachmaninov: Symphonic Dances & The Isle Of The Dead
$15.05 Original score composed by Phillip Glass. Conducted by Michael Reisman.
The soundtrack to Errol Morris' documentary The Thin Blue Line emphasizes story over music; the interviews which make up the majority of the film -- a crusading effort which led to the the release of its subject, Randall Adams, from a Texas prison -- are presented on record as they were on screen, with Glass' chamber orchestra music hovering in the background. The result is a soundtrack which comes remarkably close to capturing the power of its source film; even without the moving images, this is a chilling document. ~ Jason Ankeny
