The original score for the film MASTER AND COMMANDER is the result of a collaborative effort by three composers: Iva Davies, Christopher Gordon, and Richard Tognetti. Their music matches the movie's epic scale and effectively conveys the exhilaration of adventure on the high seas during the Napoleonic wars. Tracks such as "The Far Side of the World" and "Smoke N'Oakum" are panoramic soundscapes full of dramatic themes and evocative motifs, while "Into the Fog," "The Doldrums," and "The Battle" utilize propulsive rhythms and atmospheric sound effects to create an ambiance of mystery, danger, and suspense. The tour to support 2002's Whiskey Store album featuring guitarists Jimmy Thackery and Tab Benoit is captured here in all of its raging six-string glory. Not just for those who own the studio album, this disc repeats six tracks, but they are overhauled and extended so radically (the title cut is nearly tripled in length to a nine-minute blowout), that it's far from a cash-generating retread. Although the formidable Double Trouble rhythm section stayed home, road tested Thackery's saxist Jimmy Carpenter jumps aboard, as does B-3 keyboardist Ken Faltinson, and both ignite the concert sparks substantially. Benoit, who takes the majority of the vocals, brings versions of classics like "I Got Loaded" and Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine," as well as his own blistering "Bayou Boogie" to the set list, replacing a few of the less stellar songs from the studio effort. Thackery is also in top form, livening up Chicago shuffle-versions of Dylan's "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" and Percy Mayfield's "Strange Things Happen" -- the latter featuring a honking sax solo from Carpenter -- with his tough Strat attack and gritty vocals. Conceived as a set of three comic one-act operas, Les Dames à trois...et Piano was written for the three women who appear in them with the composer playing a supporting character from the piano. The first, Piano Detective takes a ‘film-noire’ approach to a mystery involving the theft of a cadence. The second, Piano Princess, features a princess seeking her own Broadway show. Dismayed at the tales of all the other princesses she knows, Cinderella, Snow White, Belle, and Aurora who have their names in marquees all over Times Square, she seeks out Rick, a general all around fairytale handyman, to aid her in her quest to bring about the perfect fairytale. The third, ...And Piano Make Three, is about Sarah and her boyfriend, Richard, who plays the piano. She met him in Central Park while he was exercising his portable Casio keyboard and has been in love with him ever since. However, now that it is a year later, she is beginning to wonder how she can get his attention. He never stops playing the piano — not even long enough to take her to the Rainbow Room and propose. She soon sets out to use every means at her disposal to take on the piano.The one acts use a variety of musical styles and move from the warm mezzo of Piano Detective to the soaring coloratura of Sarah as she engages in duets with her rival, the grand piano. Thus, the woman’s voice becomes increasingly higher from act to act. In addition to the casting, several other commonalities bind the three acts together.
