The name of the group is a little deceptive since the Harp Consort contains only one harpist, Andrew Lawrence-King, alongside up to four guitarists/lutenists, two gamba players, and a percussionist. Not every instrumentalist plays on every track, however, so the harp almost invariably dominates. This may sound boring to non-harp lovers, but it's not so bad. For one thing, Lawrence-King uses seven different harps and harp-like instruments over the course of the album, some quite powerful and rather far removed from the stereotypically dreamy sound of the modern concert harp. For another thing, the music comes from a 1677 collection of dance band music from Spain, so the pieces are bound to have some rhythm. Unfortunately, this consideration is partially neutralized by the tendency classical musicians have of turning dynamic dance music into static objects of aesthetic contemplation.
The three best pieces are the ones which employ all the musicians: "Xacaras por primer tono," "Torneo," and "El Gran Duque & Baylete" actually get up enough steam to be danceable. ...

"Good Guys and Bad Guys," the opener on Camper Van Beethoven's self-titled third album, is one of those songs that makes you feel like you're 16, in love, tan, carefree, and intoxicated. For anyone interested in accessing these feelings regularly, CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN is worth purchasing for this track alone. Fortunately, there is plenty of other fun to be had here (and if this eclectic California ensemble is anything, it's fun). Country, ska, punk, folk, Balkan dance, and experimental noise are mixed with art-school ambition and grade-school levity in a way that somehow works, and is all the more appealing for its originality.
The pell-mell explosion of "Surprise Truck," the twangy political allegory of "Joe Stalin's Cadillac," and the reverent, sonically remarkable cover of Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" shift gears with zany aplomb. Considered one of the finest counter tenors of his generation, Ryland Angel makes the switch from the rarefied world of Baroque music -- which established him as an international star -- to the land of pop classical on his lushly produced major-label debut. While some of the press materials tried to link him to more pop oriented singer/songwriters like Aaron Neville, James Taylor and James Blunt, Angel's stunningly beautiful, ethereal and transcendent voice will appeal just as much to fans of Josh Groban.
