On the heels of Metallica's similarly conceived S&M comes the Scorpions' Moment of Glory, a presentation of past favorites (plus three new songs) with full orchestral backing courtesy of the Berlin Philharmonic. The rock instrumentation blends in best on the ballads, but some of the up-tempo rockers can also be pretty exciting, if a little bombastic. That said, the Scorpions' music isn't always complex enough to suggest interesting ways of augmenting the original arrangements -- but since this is more a specialty item for diehards in the first place, that won't likely matter in the end. Some fans may be disappointed that Klaus Meine gives way to guest vocalists on a couple of tunes, but overall, this is a variation on the Scorpions' signature sound that loyalists will probably enjoy quite a bit. ~ Steve Huey The Scorpions and the Berlin Philharmonic team up for a record that, amazingly, is a credit to both the classical and rock communities. Recorded in Berlin and Vienna, MOMENT puts a new spin on some old favorites. Conceived in the mid-'90s, the album came to fruition with the help of arranger Christian Kolonovits. "Hurricane 2000" begins with a symphonic piece that hints at the familiar riff that dominated rock radio in the '80s. "Moment Of Glory" is a beautiful new ballad written featuring a choir. "Send Me An Angel," equally as sweeping, is given a new life in this classical version by the vocal talents of Zucchero. "Crossfire" is a combination of violins and the superb lead guitar work of Matthias Jabs; it builds to a bombastic crescendo. The band continues its power ballad trend on "Here In My Heart," where Klause Meine duets beautifully with Lyn Liechty. On MOMENT OF GLORY, the Scorps reinvent themselves once again; feel the sting.
