$11.39 Recorded between 1970 & 1974. Originally released on Apple & Warner Brothers. Includes liner notes by Andy Davis.
Easily one of pop music's greatest would-be success stories and most well-known tragedies, Beatles proteges Badfinger wrote some of the definitive tunes of the power-pop era. There is considerably more to the story of Badfinger than the 18 tracks on this concise best-of would have it, yet as a primer on this most bittersweet of bands, it certainly does its job. Included here is the Paul McCartney-penned hit single "Come and Get It," the power-pop gem "No Matter What," the pensive "Day After Day," and "Without You," arguably the band's biggest hit, as it would prove to be a smash for both Harry Nilsson and, decades later, Mariah Carey. That such wonderful music didn't prevent the band members from ending up destitute and miserable only adds to the songs' emotional impact. THE VERY BEST is an excellent introduction to Badfinger, but once a taste has been had, a deeper investigation is essential.

Glazunov: The Seasons, Violin Concerto
$10.15 Director Tim Blake Nelson sets Shakespeare's OTHELLO in a modern day private high school and the result is a dark, somber teen tragedy. Mekhi Phifer (CLOCKERS) stars as Odin James, an African American star basketball player at the otherwise all-white school. The coach of the team (Martin Sheen) loves Odin like a son, which causes real son Hugo (Josh Hartnett) to squirm with jealousy and plan an elaborate revenge. Julia Stiles (a modern dress Shakespeare regular, having also co-starred in HAMLET and TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU) is Desi, the virginal daughter of the dean, with whom Odin is in love. The ensuing outburst of tragic teen violence is a shocking denouement that elevates the already dangerous mood of the film to full-fledged terror.
Because of the intense violence in the film, it was shelved for years by a nervous Miramax in the wake of the real-life Columbine high school massacre. Finally, it was picked up by Lion's Gate Films. Upon viewing the film, such worry seems needless, as the film does nothing to glorify the violence it depicts. It explores themes of class, race, and all-consuming jealousy. Shakespeare's original dialogue is abandoned in favor of hip-hop-flavored modern language, but the tale's timeless relevance remains unaltered.
Hot young stars, a hop, driving soundtrack, plus a provocative tale of jealousy and betrayal combine to create this controversial modern-day version of Shakespeare's classic, "Othello." Stars Julia Stiles, Josh Hartnett and Mekhi Phifer.

Glazunov: The Seasons, Violin Concerto
$9.69 This fourth installment of the series takes place ten years after the original and finds the man in the William Shatner mask in a coma and being transferred from Richmond Mental Institute to Smith's Grove. However, the van gets into a horrible accident, skidding off the road and exploding. Predictably, Myers' body is nowhere to be found in the wreckage, alarming both the skeptical police and the indefatigable Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence). Soon, Myers is spotted back in Haddonfield, and it becomes obvious that his next target is his young niece, Jamie (Danielle Harris). His return has whipped the town into a frenzied mob, which proves to be unfortunate for the Halloween revelers who have chosen the popular "Michael Myers" mask as their costume. Often considered the best of the sequels, THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS is a return to form for the series after the debacle of HALLOWEEN 3.

$13.09 String Tribute to Tool features a number of string performers interpreting some of the esteemed heavy metal band's best-known songs. While the transition from heavy metal to strings may seem like an awkward leap in the minds of many, Tool's music makes the leap surprisingly well. It's the band's somewhat covert emphasis on dynamic song structures and progressive motifs rather than metal clichés that makes this transition seem so effortless. Anyone with a taste for Tool's more superfluous moments should find this album particularly interesting. It's an album that definitely acknowledge's the band's high-brow elements. ~ Jason Birchmeier
