This session accented the funk/R&B and rock elements of Connors' arsenal; the eight selections were dominated both by drummer Dave Weckl's prominent backbeats and Connors' riffs and dashing licks, as well as catchy hooks, progressions, and patterns from bassist Tom Kennedy. Such songs as "A Pedal," "Brody," and the title cut weren't melodically sophisticated, but had a bass-heavy structure and quick, animated solos. Although the date is a bit old, its qualities prove a perfect fit on several new adult contemporary and lite-jazz outlets. ~ Ron Wynn

| Step It! Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Jazz Guitar player Anyone who knows who Bill Conners is, doesn't need to read a review to know that you can't go wrong buying his music. Its a Three piece band and its not too lite nor is it too heavy.Best known for being a member of the early "Return to forever",So if you play guitar, you will love it,or if you're just a fan of electric instrumentl
jazz you will love it too.And for all you drummer fans out there, you will be glad to hear that Dave Weckl plays up a storm on this record. That alone is worth ordering this CD. Submitted by Randy (Allen,Texas, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Three "Must Own" Guitar Fusion CDs Bill Connors’ “Step It”, “Double Up” and “Assembler” were originally released in vinyl LP form twenty years ago. This would account for their relatively short playing time (only “Step It” exceeds 40 minutes). These pieces have held their own through the test of time. The compositions are strong and memorable and the performance is of the highest degree. Connors’ lushly chorused chords and warm distorted tone create sonic landscapes that will thrill any aficionado of guitar trio fusion. | | Manhattan Transfer Bop Doo-Wopp CD (1985)
Step It!
$6.09 This album, released as a stopgap between major projects, is really an anthology of various studio scraps and live remote pickups, no doubt carefully curated and selected by that indefatigable collector, Tim Hauser. The rhythm track for "My Cat Fell In the Well" dates back to 1976's Coming Out sessions (the vocals are from 1984); everything else comes from the period of 1983-84, including five performances from a live gig in Tokyo that was more comprehensively documented in 1996's Live In Tokyo. In the studio tracks -- a mostly eccentric lot -- the ebullient Transfer doo wop manner is celebrated again in "Baby Come Back to Me" and a nutty, fast "Unchained Melody." Though this is a peculiar, disjointed collection that only a Transfer collector would love -- the brief sum being less than the total of its parts -- the parts are certainly worth hearing, and they are certainly a departure away from the contemporary pop-minded Bodies and Souls. ~ ...
