| | Quest Natural Selection CD Quest Discography of CDs
Quest sometimes played reflective, ethereal pieces that were close to the material done by such bands as Oregon. At other times, they could be funky, loud, free or explosive, particularly Liebman, who played soprano with passion, frequently dazzling skill, and verve. Beirach's piano solos avoided the trap of recycling hard bop ideas and ranged from soothing melodies to energetic statements. The lack of predictability and set structure made Quest one of the 1980s' more enjoyable bands, and this CD shows why their music defied rigid categorization. ~ Ron Wynn

$13.09 Even more come across the time-worn paths of ether and obscurity: Children on the Corner is a collective made up of ex-Miles Davis sidemen from his eclectic years that include Sonny Fortune, Michael Henderson, Badal Roy, Ndugu Chancler, and Barry Finnerty. The band is led by keyboardist and composer Michael Wolff, the only non-Davis personnel. Rebirth was recorded live over two nights at the popular Oakland, CA, nightspot Yoshi's. The program is a set of tunes from Davis, as well as some group and Wolff originals. The album kicks off with one of the most inspiring readings of Josef Zawinul's "Directions." For over 21 minutes, Fortune ...

| | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
Natural Selection album
$6.39 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. ...

By fusing elements of contemporary jazz with the most lyrical aspects of pop and R&B, Kenny G has created an enduring sound signature and a fan base that rivals that of any vocalist.

Natural Selection album
$10.75 Though she only came to international prominence at the turn of the 21st century, by which time she was 70 years old and had been performing for almost 50 years, the Cuban singer Omara Portuondo is nevertheless one of the great treasures of Latin music. This best-of collects her vocal collaborations with 17 of her contemporaries--including her longtime associate, the singer Elena Burke--recorded between 1981 and 2005 in a variety of orchestral and small-group arrangements. Highlights include the romantic "Como Es Posible," the popular bolero "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas," and the sumptuous "Por Los Caminos Del Amor."
"Very few voices are capable of exemplifying a country. The inimitable flower of Caribbean song, Omara Portuondo has demonstrated her universal appeal on virtually every important stage in the world. Her perpetual counterpoint to everything around her embodies all that is Cuba. " Bladimir Zamora Cspedes, October 2006, Havana. This CD release ...
