Bassist Richard Davis built his reputation playing on essential sessions by numerous jazz legends including Sarah Vaughan, Eric Dolphy, Ahmad Jamal, and Elvin Jones. He also has a full discography under his own leadership. On this 1994 release, captured live three years earlier at Sweet Basil in New York, Davis assembled a first-rate band for a superior night of post-bop. The standout track is the Davis-penned "Dealin," featuring heated interplay between trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater and tenor saxophonist Ricky Ford. This is an excellent straight-ahead date that finds these musicians not content to rest on previous credentials, but turning what could have been "just another live date at Sweet Basil" into a memorable experience. ~ Al Campbell

The dual vocals of Betty Silberman and Rosalie Gerut (reminiscent of the Barry Sisters), dazzling new instrumentals and new Yiddish songs as well as some startling remakes of some old chestnuts (check out the post-bop arrangement of 'And the Angels Sing') combine to make this a CD a grandmother can love but which also ...

$16.19 Any two-disc collection -- no matter how well-intentioned, as this one most certainly is -- that aims to cover a career 53 years long is going to be full of holes. That said, Shout Factory's handsomely packaged label-crossing Career: 1937-1992 tries hard. Beginning with Gillespie's tenure in the NBC Orchestra led by Teddy Hill, Diz can be heard alongside Dicky Wells, Russell Procope, and Howard Johnson tearing it up on "King Porter Stomp." Live At Sweet Basil songs
$16.45 NEXT GENERATION BAND BIOThe Next Generation Band has musical roots that span back 6 decades to 1953 when Al Raymond, already a seasoned trumpeter from his days with an army concert & jazz band in General George Patton's 3rd army during WWII, a tour with the Elliot Lawrence Big Band, three years with the Philadelphia based George Summers Big Band, and leader of his own combo. Al decided it was time to put his real dream into action and form his own big band. With "Live" music still thriving in those days, it was fairly easy for Al to begin picking up gigs in the in the many ballrooms and musical bars in the Tri-State area. In 1956, the Al Raymond Big Band began to flourish as Al struck a steady "gig" on Sunday nights at Upper Darby's St. Alice's Social Center playing for the youth generation, usually over 1000 per week, ages 16-29. This was the beginning of Al's heyday. For 8 great years, the band kept the audiences' dancing feet in motion, while gaining notoriety and reaping many spin-off benefits by performing for hundreds of weddings, ballroom dances, and senior proms at many of the tri-state area high schools and colleges. All this while maintaining a full time day schedule as a school band director at Darby ...
