Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers was a true jazz academy, and all the players here, except of course drummer Billy Higgins, are alumni of that group. This live recording starts brilliantly: after the Sextet plays a short Latin intro, Higgins lets loose with a long, ghostly drum roll, conjuring Blakey's spirit. A loose, inspired arrangement of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" follows, ending with another Blakey-ish drum solo by Higgins.
Cedar Walton's leisurely blues intro on "Blues for Buhaina" recalls his work in the '60s, and alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson takes a solo also evoking that era. Walton's full solo on this tune is unusually focused and inspired, with one good idea leading effortlessly to another. It's exciting to hear this 64-year-old pianist continuing exploring old ground and finding new things. Other tunes included in this set are Benny Golson's "Whisper Not," and Horace Silver's "Split Kick." Billy Higgins's playing is notable throughout; when he trades fours with the band on "Split Kick," his channeling of Art Blakey's sound and concepts is uncanny.

Art Blakey Legacy
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's ...

Art Blakey Legacy
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought ...

Art Blakey Legacy
$19.79 Recorded between 1967 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Jim Ladd.
Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Doors album, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS supercedes all former Doors compilations. At two discs and 34 tracks, this is quite comprehensive for a band whose key lineup released only half a dozen albums. In addition to all the expected hits like "Light My Fire," "Hello I Love You," and "Roadhouse Blues," this compilation delves much deeper into the catalogue with fan favorites such as "Not To Touch the Earth" and "Wishful Sinful," as well as a handful of previously obscure rarities. Remastered and newly ...
| | John Boswell Count Me In CD (1992)
Art Blakey Legacy
$14.65 Boswell's first release for Hearts of Space expands his musical and stylistic palette. Along with the expressive piano and saxophone work that mark his first releases, Count Me In adds touches of folk and jazz elements for an increasingly diverse style. "Do It as a Friend" melds fretless bass and piano with Irish whistle and soprano sax for a Celtic-jazz hybrid, while "Skye Boat Song" explores the Celtic tradition further by adding silky piano and cello to a melody based on an old Scottish folk song. Premiere Celtic artist Joannie Madden plays tin whistle and low whistle on this piece. However, Boswell's piano is the focus on songs like "Aletha" and "Underwater Scene." Synth, guitar and saxophone accents round out this unique collection. ~ Heather Phares

| | Irvin Mayfield How Passion Falls CD (2001)
Art Blakey Legacy
$11.39 This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
On his second album for the Basin Street label, 22-year-old trumpeter Irvin Mayfield remains strongly influenced by his mentor Wynton Marsalis. The extent of the influence seems deliberately underscored by a video clip, included on this enhanced CD, that shows Marsalis giving Mayfield track-by-track feedback on his new work. (Mayfield listens receptively, at times squirming in his seat.) The compositions ripple with modern, hard-hitting, post-bop swing and a variety of subtle Latin influences -- very much the kind of music Marsalis was making in the mid- to late '80s. While Mayfield's music benefits to some extent from its association with the best aspects of Marsalis's writing ...
