The album opens with a swingingly innovative solo by trombonist Steve Turre on Curtis Fuller's "Arabia," a medium tempo modal/blues number. A laid back and equally innovative Walton solos over encouraging interjections by Philip Harper (trumpet) and Javon Jackson (tenor sax). Billy Higgins drumming summons Art Blakey, and the tune then vamps into a fadeout--a cinematic Arabian sunset.
This is the second of two live 1993 recordings by the Cedar Walton Sextet dedicated to the music of Art Blakey. Comprised entirely of former Jazz Messengers (except for Higgins), the Sextet plays tunes taken from the Messengers' songbook. Blakey encouraged his Messengers to write, and composers like Cedar Walton, Horace Silver, Benny Golson, and Wayne Shorter took him up on it (and went on to have illustrious, productive careers).
Benny Golson's familiar "Blues March," a Blakey staple, is an unhurried delight. Javon Jackson, perhaps inspired by Lou Donaldson's authentic and expressive alto on "If I Had You," lets loose with a passionately articulated tenor solo. Walton seems to enjoy hanging with the rhythm section for most of this album, but on this tune he steps forward with a wonderfully shaped solo that seems to recall Blakey in its edged, bluesy optimism.

| | John Hammond, Jr So Many Roads CD (1965)
Bambino: Cedar Walton Plays Music Of Art Blakey music CDs
$16.29 So Many Roads is Hammond's most notable mid-'60s Vanguard album, due not so much to Hammond's own singing and playing (though he's up to the task) as the yet-to-be-famous backing musicians. Three future members of the Band -- Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, and Levon Helm -- are among the supporting cast, along with Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica, and Mike Bloomfield also contributes. It's one of the first fully realized blues-rock albums, although it's not in the same league as the best efforts of the era by the likes of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band or John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. In part that's because the repertoire is ...
