One hopes this gorgeous album will at last spread the news about the superb jazz vocalist/pianist Andy Bey, a well-kept secret for most of his long career. Like his contemporaries Shirley Horn and Jimmy Scott, both of whom also emerged from undeserved obscurity only in the '90s, Bey prefers to work with glacially slow tempos. But while Horn still favors dry phrasing born of years in the cabarets and Scott ever perfects his signature art of the wail, Bey's burnished, sensual baritone luxuriates in a warm bath of sound and melody, prolonged as long as decency permits.
The selections on SHADES --Sergio Mendes' "Like A Lover," the late art-rocker Nick Drake's "River Man," "Drume Negrita," an Afro-Cuban lullaby--set the mood even more effectively than the more standard jazz fare offered on the previous BALLADS, BLUES & BEY. Bey hasn't neglected his roots however, what with a spirited rendition of Monk's "Straight No Chaser" as well as two compositions by Billy Strayhorn--the little known and lovely "Pretty Girl (The Starcrossed Lovers)" and a definitive version of the astonishingly beautiful "Blood Count."

Shades Of Bey CD music
$13.35 Recorded between June 6 and December 12, 2000. Includes liner notes by Margaret Jordan.
Vocalist/pianist Andy Bey is in fine form on Tuesdays in Chinatown, the third installment in a comeback series that began in 1995 with Ballads, Blues & Bey and continued with 1998's Shades of Bey. Here Bey continues to explore fairly eclectic repertoire. His jazz roots are well represented with standards such as "I'll Remember April," "Invitation," "Little Girl Blue," and "Just Friends." There are also two beautiful songs by Milton Nascimento, "Bridges" and "Saidas e Bandeiras" ...
| | Miles Davis In Person At The Blackhawk: Complete CDs (2003) Remastered; Box Set
Shades Of Bey music CDs
$31.45 "Walkin'" is taken at the kind of jaunty tempo that distinguished the Wynton Kelly-Paul Chambers-Jimmy Cobb rhythm axis. Paul Chambers' buoyant, effortless beat, his sure sense of harmony and swing, and his resounding brand of melodic bass (dig his little bowed break at the conclusion of "Walkin'") are the glue which hold these performances together. On "Walkin'" he and Jimmy Cobb lock up the groove as if swinging were the same as breathing, allowing Kelly to engage the trumpeter in a continual dialogue, feinting counterpoint and feeding him his favorite chords, then dropping away to allow Miles to stroll for a taste.
Kelly's joy is infectious on the band's old warhorse "Bye Bye Blackbird" ...
| | Andy Bey American Song CD (2004)
Shades Of Bey songs
$14.39 In a field traditionally dominated by women, jazz vocalist Andy Bey has made a name for himself as a unique song interpreter as well as a skilled pianist, his deep, resonant voice the polar opposite of the usual feminine take on the jazz legacy. While Bey's source materials have ranged far and wide over the course of his long career, AMERICAN SONG finds him sticking strictly to the tried-and-true Great American Songbook. Amazingly, Bey finds something new in old war-horses like "Lush ...

Shades Of Bey album
$15.19 The Duke Meets the Earl seems like an obvious album, pairing two of New England's finest contemporary blues guitarists, Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl, who both share the same sort of hard, clear tone in their playing (Earl actually replaced Robillard in Roomful of Blues when the latter left the group for a solo career). For Earl, who has been working in a kind of jazz blues hybrid style in recent years, it marks a return to straight blues, and with guests like Jimmy McGriff and Mighty Sam McClain aboard on select tracks, The Duke Meets the Earl has the feel of a super session. Throughout, Earl's guitar is featured in the left channel and Robillard's in the right, leading to some wonderful guitar dialogues, particularly on an epic, nearly 16-minute-long version of Walter Price's "My Tears." Another extended workout occurs on "A Soul That's Been Abused," an Earl original, which features McClain on vocals and stretches out to just over 13 minutes. ...
| | Brad Mehldau House On Hill CD (2006)
Shades Of Bey CD music
$15.65 House on Hill may be a new recording, but the material is not. Virtually everything here was written, according to his liner notes -- like Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau writes about himself best -- in a session done in 2004 which yielded 18 songs with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy. The decision was made to split the sets into originals and covers. The covers became 2004's Anything Goes. There are nine cuts here, the remaining seven from 2004, and the other two come from a more recent ...
