The New Orleans pianist ventured overseas in 1971 and waxed this CD along the way with a mighty unlikely band: guitarists Gatemouth Brown and Jimmy Dawkins and a Chicago rhythm section (bassist Mac Thompson and drummer Ted Harvey). A lesser musician might have wilted with players so unfamiliar with his basic approach, but Pleasant's bubbly ebullience and the strength of his "Box Car Shorty," "Life Is a One Way Ticket," and "Railroad Porter Blues" saved the day. ~ Bill Dahl

NATURALLY has stood up over the years as a perfect debut. When released in 1971, it introduced J.J. Cale's rootsy, laid back grooves to excellent effect, and in the decades since, this album and its follow-up, REALLY, have remained classics of mellow '70s country-rock. Riding on the ...

Blue Trane: John Coltrane Plays The Blues
Blue Trane: John Coltrane Plays The Blues CD  (1957)

Bad Luck Blues music CDs
CD $11.25  Audio Samples Definitive Album
This Enhanced-CD version of BLUE TRAIN features audio tracks from BLUE TRAIN, interviews with jazz musicians (including Curtis Fuller, who played trombone on BLUE TRAIN), still pictures and video clips from the period, and a multimedia biography of Coltrane. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1996, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). With 1957's BLUE TRAIN, John Coltrane not only firmly established his own voice on the tenor saxophone, but also proved his abilities as a bandleader and composer. The musicians on BLUE TRAIN, hand-picked by Coltrane himself, play superbly, not only as individuals, but also as a cohesive unit--a rare occurence in an era where "all-star" ensembles would come together for one session, then disband just as quickly. Nineteen-year-old trumpeter Lee Morgan spins bop lines in a warm tone, belying his age with his extraordinary playing, while drummer Philly Joe Jones and bassist Paul Chambers keep BLUE TRAIN running with impressive agility. Two of Coltrane's compositions here, "Moment's Notice" and "Lazy Bird," contain the seeds of harmonic exploration to be found in his later work. At this stage of his career, Trane was still occupied with blowing over increasingly challenging chord changes. His unique tone could be warm and sweet or sharp and insistent, but is always amazingly expressive. Throughout this revered album, Coltrane packs more emotion into one phrase than most arists are capable of in a whole tune. Recorded in 1957, BLUE TRAIN is considered by the artist himself to be his finest work. In the mid-50's, Trane played with Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk, and he used the experience to propel himself to new heights of improvisational hard bop. The elements that comprise BLUE TRAIN would come to influence every generation of musicians that followed. The bluesy title track kicks in with an extended Coltrane tenor sax solo. Four years later Coltrane would also adopt soprano sax into his fold. This leads into solos by Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew on piano and Paul Chambers brings it home on the bass. Philly Joe Jones keeps ...
Illuminati
Pastels Illuminati CD  (1997)

Bad Luck Blues songs
CD $11.85  Audio Samples
On paper, Illuminati looks like it would be an amazing collection of remixes. With 15 assorted artists remixing twelve different songs by The Pastels, one would think there'd be a great deal of variation between the remixes, especially considering the talent of the remixers. But Illuminati ultimately falls a bit flat, as artists as diverse as My Bloody Valentine, Cornelius, Stereolab, To Rococo Rot, Future Pilot AKA, and Jim O'Rourke, among others, mostly play things too close to the vest. The result is that the tracks sound remarkably similar, and, for the most part, like white-washed versions of the original songs. It doesn't help that three songs make multiple appearances in various forms. Some tracks end up working no better than aural wallpaper. My Bloody Valentine, which makes two appearances, seems to be the chief influence of most of the other remixers; the first remix is too short to leave much of an impression, so ardent fans won't be as happy as they expected to be upon finding out that two new My Bloody Valentine creations are included. The best moments come from Cornelius, Future Pilot AKA, John McEntire, and Ian Carmichael. The Cornelius remix of "Windy Hill" is as interesting and exciting as anything from his Fantasma album; it's pretty, touching, and accomplished. Ian Carmichael turns The Viaduct into an even more gentle, stop-start ballad, full of interesting sounds and sweeping, sampled guitars. Future Pilot AKA's additional work on "Rough Riders" adds more to the original song than most of the other remixers combined; the song winds up sounding like a frazzled, joyous play on the original. John McEntire's remix of "Remote Climbs" is more mature and interesting than most of the work he's done with Tortoise; it's clear that he respected the original version, while still setting out to make a near-symphonic, electronic reworking. Too many artists simply distill the Pastels' light sounds without crafting anything compelling in the process. Either they were pressed for time or inspiration, or they just wanted to have their names printed along side the other remixers; the lesser tracks mostly just sample instrumental ...
