| | Larry Garner Baton Rouge CD Larry Garner Discography of CDs
This was supposed to be Garner's follow-up album to his breakthrough third album, You Need to Live a Little, released in 1994. Due to contract problems, however, it never saw an American release until 1999. Like its predecessor, Garner's brand of blues moves between Excello swamp blues and more soulful, contemporary styles with a strong songwriting sense ingrained in all of it. A solid band, including Larry McCray on guitar and Willie Weeks on bass, drives this session right along. Highlights include "Jook Joint Woman," "The Road of Life," "Airline Blues," "The Have and the Have Nots," and "Go to Baton Rouge." A lost little classic. ~ Cub Koda

| | Souther-Hillman-Furay Band Trouble In Paradise CD (1975) Souther Hillman Furay Band
Baton Rouge music CDs
$10.65 With producer Tom Dowd, known for his work at Atlantic Records, at the helm, the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band seemed to be distancing itself a bit from its country-rock roots with its second release, the appropriately titled Trouble in Paradise. Here the band expands on the funkier aspects of its debut album, while at the same time slipping even closer to the middle of the road. On that record it was former Poco frontman Richie Furay who was responsible for the highlights, but this time out it's J.D. Souther, who penned four of the LP's nine tracks, who leads the way, with "Prisoner in Disguise" (recorded that same year by Linda Ronstadt) and the title cut the standouts. Still, Furay, whose two compositions were dominated by his recent conversion to Christianity, does connect with the lovely "For Someone I Love," which interestingly enough ...
| | Henry Paul CD (1982)
Baton Rouge songs
$10.49 By 1982, Henry Paul was completely devoid of musical direction, let alone inspiration. After issuing a truly fine album in Anytime a year before, Paul decided on yet another musical change in direction. On his eponymously titled final album for Atlantic before re-forming the Outlaws, Paul took the hard boogie stance of Feel the Heat and married it to pop hooks à la Boston, Loverboy, and Styx, making for a truly disastrous finale. The shrill edges in the vocals seem to be trying to get something out of Bruce Springsteen's mileage as well. But the choruses on "Nightline" are right off of Styx's Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight albums. Synthesizers careen into incredibly shattering -- yet compressed -- power chords; the guitars and drums are more filtered through effects than they are played. While ...

| | Dance Gavin Dance Downtown Battle Mountain CD (2007)
Baton Rouge songs
$10.89 Like many bands hoping to survive the burning wreckage of emo-screamo's Hindenburg, Sacramento, CA's Dance Gavin Dance play the "eclectic" card on their 2007 debut album, Downtown Battle Mountain, an album that verges on the loaded tag of "progressive," it's so far removed from those genres' distant roots in good old-fashioned hardcore. In fact, hardcore's minimalist ethos also couldn't be further from Dance Gavin Dance's unapologetic virtuosity and unorthodox song ...
