Few modern-era Hollywood composers are more effective at writing period scores than George Fenton, and Memphis Belle represents his most complete and stirring work to date -- not only does the music conjure the heroism and danger of World War II in vivid detail, but its artful appropriation of '40s pop and swing idioms perfectly captures the musical spirit of the times as well. Fenton instills Memphis Belle with a sweeping romanticism that perfectly complements the music's classical sensibilities -- its adventure themes and motifs positively soar, while its jazzy accents communicate the boyishness and recklessness of the young men who took to the skies to combat the Axis forces. Best of all, Memphis Belle is emotional but never manipulative -- Fenton respects his music and his listeners too much to rely on cheap tricks. ~ Jason Ankeny

A nicely evocative score album that doesn't resort to the clichés of horror film scoring -- far fewer loud stings and far more thematic development than might be expected. Pino Donaggio has well earned his place amongst the best composers for film, and was an inspired choice for this particular effort. The one area in which the score is somewhat lacking is in the songs themselves: Katie Irving's vocals are far too weak for the music. Otherwise, subtlety is the order of the day -- gentle melody counterbalanced against terrible horror. Ryko's Enhanced CD includes the film's spectacular trailer. ...

Sloan managed to tinker with its signature sound -- '60s pop meets '90s indie pop -- while pleasing its current fans and gaining new ones. The band's fifth studio album, Between the Bridges, is one of its best and most consistent -- it's Navy Blues with better production, higher-quality songs, and a polished (but definitely not slick) sound. Sloan returns to producer/engineer extraordinaire Brenndan McGuire, who produced Twice Removed and One Chord to Another, to illustrate how the band's sound has improved and evolved since OCTA and even Navy Blues. The tighter arrangements and the band's naturally engaging songwriting make Between the Bridges a standout in the band's already impressive discography.
