Fred Hamilton is a guitarist with a dry but flexible sound who mostly plays introspective and thoughtful material on Looking Back on Tomorrow. On "Too Much, Too Close," he shows that he can cook conventionally in a swinging setting, but most of the other songs are ballads or surprisingly rockish romps. The setting provided by bassist David Friesen and drummer Ed Soph is generally sparse and fits Hamilton's open-minded approach well. Overall this is a thought-provoking set of original music. ~ Scott Yanow

This release signals in the then 33-year old, Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen's debut outing for the ECM Records label. More than most jazz lite artists, Peter White flaunts a restless improvisational sense, which is fully evident on Glow. Aside from a few incidental fills tossed into the breeze by this or that horn player, this is entirely White's show. His performance on all these tracks, typically over a backdrop of gauzy major-seventh string pads, provides a lesson in long-form jamming against a steady, sensuous backbeat, with octave passages and a buoyant rhythm feel that echo Wes Montgomery. Despite these similarities, White displays a distinctive sound, with blues and Spanish influences perfuming his romantic phrases. The original material is unmemorable, and even such familiar titles as "Just My Imagination" and "Who's That Lady" stretch into one- or two-chord vamps that serve as broad thoroughfares for his solos; without having to twist through a maze of chord changes, White can kick back, close his eyes, and let long, liquid lines flow. This is, of course, a pretty standard formula among easy listening artists, but White shows an unusual ability to keep things interesting while cruising through open musical vistas. Soul of the Conga is the great follow-up release to Poncho Sanchez's Grammy Award winning CD Latin Soul, and it is every bit as soulful and special. As his 20th CD as a bandleader, (his 18th for Concord Picante), the release also celebrates the 20th anniversary of the master conguero's group. The conguero and his three-horn, three-percussion octet play 14 songs in a set filled with the fiery, vibrant rhythms that have defined the soul of Latin jazz. From the ChaChaCha on "Oye Lo" to the changüi with The Ortiz Brothers on "Venga a Bailar Bailadores (Changui)," Poncho Sanchez plays a solid set filled with excitement and infectious grooves. Organist Joey DeFrancesco joins him on seven songs, adding his Hammond B3 originality, while Terence Blanchard adds another level of soul with his great trumpet on "Stella By Starlight." The octet stretches on Alphonse Mouzon's "Virtue," with blistering percussion, excellent horn charts, and organ underlinings that make this song an instant favorite because of its great groove.
