$16.79 This is a collection of extremely rare 78s recorded by the New York Recording Laboratories for release on its Broadway and Paramount labels in the late '20s and centers around banjo player Bill Haid and his various groups, who recorded under a number of monikers including the Black Pirates, the Manhattan Entertainers, the Castle Farm Serenaders, and Bill Haid's Cubs. There are some wonderful pieces here, like the half-paced version of "Slue Foot," but much of it is fairly generic dance music of the time. The sound quality is also a problem, ranging from passable to awful depending on the track, making this archival release of interest to only collectors and historians. ~ Steve Leggett

$18.19 "Their musicianship is impeccable," raves Rosie O'Donnell's music director and co-producer John McDaniel. "Their fresh approach to these familiar pieces is inspiring," adds Suzie Katayama, whose work as orchestrator and arranger for artists like Michael Jackson and Alanis Morissette is known worldwide. Film composer Todd Hayen notes, "While the finely-crafted arrangements are drawn from across the centuries, David's and Karen's artistry and grace unify the pieces into an enchanting and transcendent listening experience."Karen M. Smith and David Snyder began their musical association back in 1993 when they met at the ASCAP film composer's seminar; David was a featured composer and Karen was on staff as the head music librarian. Shortly thereafter, they performed for the first time together as instrumentalists and discovered a unique pairing of musical sensibilities. The unity and clarity with which they play has earned them a remarkable following in the past ten years, and Colors of the Wind, their first album together, has brought their music to an even larger audience. Karen and David are currently planning their concert schedule for 2006 and a new Christmas CD. In addition to being one of Hollywood's most sought-after music librarians, with a client list that includes composers John Williams, Lalo Schifrin and David Benoit, Karen has enjoyed a remarkable renaissance as a flutist. In the past several years, she has helped popularize flute choirs in California and nationally. She was the founder and co-director of the Los Angeles Flute Orchestra from 1999-2004, an ensemble made up of professional studio and orchestral flutists. Under Karen's direction, the group grew to be one of the largest professional ensembles of its kind and achieved a high level of recognition, including televised performances at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion. Through Karen's efforts, The LAFO attracted the interest of some of today's most talented film composers and orchestrators, whose compositions and arrangements are currently being performed by the orchestra. Karen's newest L.A.-based professional flute choir, RESONANCE, has just released a Christmas CD of popular holiday pieces, especially created and arranged for the group by top Hollywood film composers. In a multi-faceted career that has spanned 20 years, David has proven himself as a pianist, musical director/conductor, composer, arranger/orchestrator and songwriter. He has worked with film clients such as Francis Ford Coppola and Sarah Michelle Gellar, for Tony Award winners Christine ...
