| | Donny Hathaway Collection CD (1990)
Old City music CDs
$8.05 Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, most dirge-like solo recordings. A few of his best up-tempo tracks are represented ("The ...

| | Best Of Michel Petrucciani - The Blue Note Years CD (1993)
Old City music CDs
$11.29 The single-disc Best Of outing is a mixed blessing. The 12 performances include the wonderful "Bimini" from Power Of Three, as well as trio and quartet takes from arguably his best release, Pianism, and six cuts with him playing acoustic and electric keyboards on the same composition. But the disc gives a grab-bag feel for Petrucciani the composer and improviser; we can't tell how his approach evolved, nor chart his growth or stagnation. In addition, the company doesn't even provide complete recording information, omitting the dates for the tracks. The ridiculously exaggerated, incomplete liner notes place Petrucciani in the company of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, an absurd comparison...So while it isn't a definitive compilation, it does function ...

| | Doc Cheatham Meets The Swiss Dixie Stompers Plus Two CD (2003)
Old City music CDs
$13.85 Doc Cheatham was 90 at the time that he recorded this live set with the Swiss Dixie Stompers, but he could still hit high notes on his trumpet and take charming vocals. Although initially a bit nervous about sitting in with a band he had never heard of (as he relates during a short interview), the combination works well and the bandmembers (taking the first two songs without their guest) were clearly quite inspired to be playing with the ancient legend. The problem with this release is that the balance is off (Cheatham's vocals often sound off-mike), the ensembles are overcrowded (with the two reeds filling in all the space), and Cheatham shows his age a bit, occasionally missing notes. Since he was 90, it is understandable, though he tends to be stronger on his last studio sessions. There is certainly plenty of spirit to be heard throughout the concert and trumpeter Andre Racine apparently ...

| | New Orleans North Born 40 Years Too Late CD (2006)
Old City album
$25.35 NEW ORLEANS NORTH! Hurricane Katrina ravaged much of the quaint, old, Southern city that gave birth to America's greatest artist gift to the world, New Orleans Jazz. The blues, the joys and the stomps so lovingly created by Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Joe King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, and others, are still bringing people together around the world in such diverse places London, Paris, Moscow, New York, Vancouver and Whitehorse. And it is this soul-soothing, spirit-lifting music that has brought together the members of New Orleans North. Lloyd discovered Sidney Bechet by way of 78 rpm records on the dusty plains of Saskatchewan eons ago, and brought this passion with him to the Pacific Coast. Years later, Alan, as a young student, was attending the Courtenay Youth Music Camp as was Lloyd's daughter, Jenny. She noticed that he was listening to Bix Beiderbecke records on his portable turn-table. ...
