| | Mark Ladley Evidence CD Mark Ladley Discography of CDs
veteran drummer's third release, straight ahead an fresh versions of standards with colorful solos
Personnel includes: Mark Ladley (drums); Melvin Rhyne (piano, organ). Personnel: Mark Ladley (drums); John Greiner (tenor saxophone); Melvin Rhyne Quartet (piano, organ); Laura Caviani, Melvin Rhyne (piano); Mark Ludley (drums). Recording information: Riverside Productions Recording Studio, Mosinee, WI (1993). Photographer: Nancy Bennedetti. As with his previous Altenburgh CD, Strictly Business, Evidence features drummer Mark Ladley performing half of the program in a trio with the excellent (if underrated) tenor saxophonist John Greiner and organist Mel Rhyne; "Drop Me Off in Harlem" and Thelonious Monk's "Evidence" are most memorable. In addition, there is a Ladley-Rhyne duet on Irving Berlin's "Remember," two songs played by Ladley with pianist Laura Caviani and bassist David Dunn, and one number ("I'll Remember April") that has Rhyne switching to piano and jamming with a quartet also including Ladley, Greiner, and bassist Charlie Hoats. No matter what the instrumental combination, the music swings and these Midwest musicians show that they can hold their own with their New York and Los Angeles counterparts. ~ Scott Yanow

Evidence
$14.09 Audio Mixer: Todd Whitelock. Photographer: Raj Naik. Detroit comprises a six-composition suite commissioned for the 2009 thirtieth anniversary Detroit International Jazz Festival, played in the studio with musicians from composer/arranger Gerald Wilson's Los Angeles home or New York City area. Curiously, there are no Motor City-based players on the disc, but the themes are based in certain locales from the industrial Midwestern City that has fallen on hard economic times but played a pivotal role in the development of Wilson's highly developed skills as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. A quite spirited and energetic music is heard here from the 90-year-old Wilson, whose charm and wit would rival anyone many decades his junior. It's a swinging affair molded in the traditional big-band visage of Count Basie, Ernie Wilkins, or early Quincy Jones, with Wilson's deft touch for embellishing ...

| | Marc Copland Night Whispers New York Trio Recordings: Volume 3 CD (2009) (Import) Germany
Evidence
$16.39 Personnel: Marc Copland (piano); Drew Gress (bass instrument); Bill Stewart (drums). From Erroll Garner to Cecil Taylor to Bill Evans, and from Chick Corea to Thelonious Monk, a wide variety of acoustic jazz pianists have thrived in the time-honored piano trio setting (piano, bass, and drums) over the years. It's a setting that has never gone out of style in jazz, and it's a setting that has served acoustic pianist Marc Copland well in his New York Trio Recordings series. The lineup has varied from one volume to the next; on New York Trio Recordings, Vol. 3: Night Whispers, Copland is joined by bassist Drew Gress and drummer Bill Stewart (whereas he was joined by bassist Gary Peacock and Stewart on Vol. 1 and by Peacock and drummer Paul Motian on Vol. 2). The constant in the series, of course, has been ...

| | Alice In Chains Dirt CD (1992)
Evidence
$6.49 Live Recording
Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Michael Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Additional personnel: Tom Araya (background vocals). Recorded in 1992. Dirt is Alice in Chains' major artistic statement and the closest they ever came to recording a flat-out masterpiece. It's a primal, sickening howl from the depths of Layne Staley's heroin addiction, and one of the most harrowing concept albums ever recorded. Not every song on Dirt is explicitly about heroin, but Jerry Cantrell's solo-written contributions (nearly half the album) effectively maintain the thematic coherence -- nearly every song is imbued with the morbidity, self-disgust, and/or resignation of a self-aware yet powerless addict. Cantrell's technically limited but inventive guitar work is by turns explosive, textured, and queasily disorienting, keeping the listener off balance with atonal riffs and off-kilter time signatures. Staley's stark confessional lyrics are similarly effective, and consistently miserable. Sometimes he's just numb and apathetic, totally desensitized to the outside world; sometimes his self-justifications betray a shockingly casual amorality; his moments of self-recognition are permeated by despair and suicidal self-loathing. Even given its subject matter, Dirt ...
