This first volume of King's Battle of the Blues series features two of the label's biggest acts: Roy Brown and Wynonie Harris. Having already made their names in the late '40s as premier blues shouters on the R&B and jump blues circuit, both singers migrated to the Cincinnati independent and reached even loftier chart heights. Brown takes up the first side with seven sides of his animated and gospel-fired vocals, including the classic "Boogie at Midnight." For his part, Harris indulges his rougher-hewn vocal cords for an update of his big smash, the Brown-penned "Good Rockin' Tonight," and one of his all-time King highlights, "Bloodshot Eyes." For some whiskey-soaked R&B nostalgia, this fine collection is hard to beat. ~ Stephen Cook
Personnel: Wynonie Harris, Roy Brown, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson.
Personnel: Wynonie Harris (vocals).

Battle Of The Blues album
$6.79 This 1997 reissue of RAW POWER was digitally remixed by Iggy Pop, Danny Kadar, and Bruce Dickinson. Pop had long complained about David Bowie's mix of the original LP.
The booklet contains an interview with Iggy Pop conducted and edited by Arthur Levy.

Battle Of The Blues songs
$15.59 This reissue is a compilation of the two Original London Cast recordings, HAIR (1968), and FRESH HAIR (1970).
The London production of Hair followed relatively closely on the New York production, opening in the West End on September 27, 1968, only five months after the Broadway premiere. And even though the show would have seemed quintessentially American (it was, after all, "the American tribal love-rock musical"), it transplanted well, running even longer. The original London cast album also replicated the success of the original Broadway cast album, peaking in the U.K. Top Five. The recording took the same approach as its American counterpart and was similarly filled with expressive performances, notably those of Paul Nicholas as Claude and Oliver Tobias as Berger, replacing lyricist/librettists James Rado and Gerome Ragni. Some elements couldn't quite be replicated. Nicholas, who was actually British, of course, tried for an American accent rather than copy the deliberately phony Cockney accent Rado had affected in "Manchester, England," which missed the point of the song, and elsewhere the cast's British accents sometimes undercut the specifically American subject ...
| | Louisiana Red Driftin' CD (2001)
Battle Of The Blues album
$13.39 Louisiana Red is a versatile performer capable of playing standard electric blues, interacting with his guitar à la Muddy Waters ("Hard Hard Time" is a good example), paying tribute to both B.B. King and Lightnin' Hopkins, or singing a religious hymn ("He Will See You Through"). Whether playing solo or performing as part of a fine blues quintet that includes Willie "Big Eyes" Smith on harmonica, Louisiana Red shows on this CD that he is one of the more significant blues stylists of the early 21st century, performing in each setting and idiom with equal sincerity and skill. Well worth exploring. ~ Scott Yanow
It’s long been said that you have to live the blues in order to play them. Whether you believe in this notion or not, it would be difficult to argue that anyone performing on the blues scene today has felt the blues more than Louisiana Red. Born Iverson Minter in Bessemer, Alabama on June 23, 1932, Red has overcome adversity at virtually every step of his life. His songs are powerful and passionate and reflect both his tragic childhood and life struggles. His life sadly began with the death of his mother to pneumonia when Red was only seven days old. When he was five years old the KKK murdered his Father. At that point he was shuffled between family members where he was abused physically and psychologically. He also spent two years in an orphanage, where he suffered further abuse. His solace throughout these difficult times was music. Making his first instrument at age nine out of an old cigar box and rubber bands, he was encouraged greatly by his grandfather, a self-taught bottleneck guitarist who gave Red his first real guitar – an old Kay acoustic that ...
