Until a box set of his King recordings appears, 28 Greatest Hits is the best available anthology of Grandpa Jones' classic early years. Sounding like Uncle Dave Macon with an electric guitar, Grandpa Jones' King sides mixed old-timey novelties with hot Travis-picking (Merle Travis and Grandpa Jones were bandmates in the Brown's Ferry Four gospel quartet), and created an anachronistic style that kept pace with the times in its own way. Not every track is electrified, but Jones' unique update of mountain music is heard most clearly on tracks such as "Five-String Banjo Boogie" and the popular "Eight More Miles to Louisville." While most of the songs are novelties, Jones plays it straight occasionally, as on "Tragic Romance" and the couple of sacred songs. Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, singer/songwriter Hank Snow became an icon of country music during the 1950s and '60s. Following in the footsteps of the legendary Jimmie Rodgers, Snow penned his own tales of love and travel (often a love of travel), most notably the timeless songs of wanderlust "I'm Movin' On" and "I've Been Everywhere," both later performed by his ardent admirer Johnny Cash.

Razor & Tie's 1996 compilation I'm Little But I'm Loud: The Jimmy Dickens Collection is the first comprehensive collection assembled on the diminutive Nashville legend, and it's also a collection that takes his frequently silly music seriously. While it hardly digs as deep as the two Bear Family boxes that followed this in 1997 and 1998, it covers the same period with the same purpose: Namely, it goes through his Columbia recordings of 1949 through 1967 with the intention of not just serving up the hits, but illustrating that Dickens was a first-rate country singer and not just a purveyor of novelties. Although it may get a little too silly at times for some listeners, it nevertheless does its job well, because it does show that Dickens' high, plaintive, nasal voice was quite versatile, and that he could tackle heartbreak ballads, hillbilly boogie, and honky tonk as well as his goofy novelties. Of course, those silly songs are what he was known for, and they're all here, from "Take an Old Cold Tater (And Wait)" in 1949 to "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose."
