$17.69 Rani Arbo grew up in New York City and started singing in a cathedral choir when she was seven.Since then, she has sung classical choral music from nine centures and traditional and contemporary folk music from several continents. She's spent ten years on the folk curciut in the U.S.and Canada, first with Salamander Crossing and now with daisy mayhem.Praised for an evocative, affecting style, Arbo's voice is light on vibrato and pakcs an emotive punch that shores up gymnastic swing tunes and ballads alike. After a childhood applied to classical cello, Arbo abandoned that godly instrument and took up the devil's own--the fiddle--in 1989.She's a pensive and quirky player, interested in swing, blues, Appalachian and gypsy styles.Self-taught for ten years, she currently studies with jazz improv maven Julie Lyonn Lieberman in New York City.Arbo lives in MIddletown, CT where she writes features and music reviews for Acoustic Guitar Magazine and Strings. When time permits.she plays in an all-girl honkytonk combo and a Bosnian rock band. daisy mayhem, with Andrew Kinsey, Anand Nayak, and Scott Kessel, is Arbo's awaited opportunity to lead her own band and explore aspects of acoustic music that lay beyond Salamander Crossing."I am freer, here, to experiment," she says."This group can play traditional material with the spirit it deserves, and get very adventuresome." A daisy mayhem set, for example, might include a Fats Waller tune on the ukelele, a twisted love song by Boston songwriter Deb Pasternak, a fiddle tune with Arbo's lyrics, her hymn-like arrangment of Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar," a racy sea shanty over mean percussion, and North Carolina gospel blues. It's a combination of melody, lyrics, emotion, and entertainment that appeals to me," says Arbo, "and it arrives in many different forms. We've chosen to put on a show based on those qualities, rather than on a specific genre; it's an inspiring challenge.

An unsuccessful attempt to assemble an album of live/BBC material by Dr. Strangely Strange (not enough usable stuff could be found), unusually, led to something better -- an entire LP's worth of well-preserved 1969-1970 studio outtakes. Those ten outtakes (with two versions of one song, "Cock-a-Doodle-Doo") form the bulk of this 2007 release, topped off by three 2006 recordings supplied specifically for ...
