An enormously popular singer during the 50's with a straightforward style and affable personality. This double CD features three classic albums recorded for King. "Sincerely Yours", "Travelling Shoes" and "Singing Up A Storm".
The Stanley Brothers: Carter Stanley (vocals, guitar), Ralph Stanley (vocals, banjo). Additional personnel: Curley Lambert (vocals, guitar, mandolin, bass); Bill Napier (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Ralph Mayo (vocals, guitar, fiddle); George Shuffler (vocals, guitar, acoustic & electric bass); Chubby Anthony (vocals, fiddle); Al Elliot (guitar, mandolin, bass); Gene Meadows (guitar); Joe Meadows, Vernon Derrick, Art Stamper (fiddle); Johnnie Bonds, Audie Webster (bass). Includes liner notes by Gary B. Reid. THE EARLY YEARS 1958-1961 includes 109 tracks recorded for the Starday and King labels (4 tracks are previously unreleased). The box also includes a 24-page color booklet with full session notes. The Early Starday-King Years: 1958-1961 is a 109-track, four-disc box set that compiles every track the Stanley Brothers cut for Starday and King during that era. At the time, the group were releasing albums both on Starday and King, so there was an immense amount of confusion between the releases; the box set helps clarify the matters, by gathering all of the music together and presenting it in chronological order. This way, it's possible to hear their progression, as well as the differences between the recordings for the two labels; on the King recordings, the Stanley Brothers tended to be more experimental, working in electric instrumentation. Though there is plenty of fine music on the set, The Early Starday-King Years is, overall, too thorough and extensive for anyone but bluegrass historians. ~ Thom Owens

| Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) A must have If you are into the music of Ralph Stanley, this one is a must have. As the Stanley Brothers, Ralph and his brother Carter put out some excellent music that explores the expected themes of love gone bad, death, loneliness, redemption. This is bluegrass at it's bluesly, soulful best. Further, this box set is a great value as each CD is packed with music at around $10 per disc. A Fine Collection I was very impressed with this collection.Although I favor traditional Bluegrass, this collection has some well done gospel Bluegrass as well. The remastering is done well and sounds great.A great "taste" from these Bluegrass Pioneer's.
