| | Barney Kessel Breakfast At Tiffany's/Bossa Nova/Contemporary Latin Rhythms CDs (2002)
Departure Dates CD music
$12.29 Conte Candoli (trumpet); Victor Feldman (vibraphone); Emil Richards (marimba); Keith Mitchell (bass); Earl Palmer, Stan Levey (drums).
Originally released on Reprise (6019), Reprise (6049) & Reprise (6073).
This double CD is more about Barney Kessel the studio player than Kessel the jazz guitar legend. Still, this compilation of three LPs originally released between 1961-1963 has some good music, and Kessel the jazz man is not entirely absent, even though the settings do not call for him to stretch out.
Breakfast at Tiffany's is Kessel's handling ...

Departure Dates music CDs
$31.45 "Walkin'" is taken at the kind of jaunty tempo that distinguished the Wynton Kelly-Paul Chambers-Jimmy Cobb rhythm axis. Paul Chambers' buoyant, effortless beat, his sure sense of harmony and swing, and his resounding brand of melodic bass (dig his little bowed break at the conclusion of "Walkin'") are the glue which hold these performances together. On "Walkin'" he and Jimmy Cobb lock up the groove as if swinging were the same as breathing, allowing Kelly to engage the trumpeter in a continual dialogue, feinting counterpoint and feeding him his favorite chords, then dropping away to allow Miles to stroll for a taste.
Kelly's joy is infectious on the band's ...
| | Lee Morgan Sonic Boom CD (1967) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Departure Dates songs
$9.45 Sonic Boom was not released until 1979 and then remained in print only for a brief time before eventually being reissued years later. In addition to the great trumpeter Lee Morgan and a fine rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Billy Higgins), the well-rounded set is a bit special for it allows the often R&B-associated tenor David "Fathead" Newman an opportunity to stretch out in a more challenging setting than usual. Highlights include the funky "Fathead," the complex "Sneaky ...

| | Don Lanphere Where Do You Start? CD (2003)
Departure Dates album
$14.99 Few veterans of the classic bebop era were still active in 2002, and even fewer were still in their musical prime. Don Lanphere is a major exception. Rather than just recreating the past (which in his case includes leading a date that featured Fats Navarro), Lanphere always looks ahead. A distinctive tenor-saxophonist, Lanphere also doubles effective on soprano and leads a top-notch sextet in the Pacific Northwest. Where Do You Start has a high-quality repertoire performed by Lanphere, cornetist Jonathan Pugh, trombonist Jeff Hay, pianist Marc Seales, bassist Doug Miller and drummer John Bishop. The five originals by group members include "Blues Away" (which is in the Art Blakey hard bop tradition), a feature for Lanphere's soprano on ...

Departure Dates CD music
$17.09 Roz Corral, who makes her recording debut on this CD, sounds a bit like Ella Fitzgerald on the opening "Too Close for Comfort," but otherwise her warm voice is quite individual. She swings, sticks close to the melody and lyrics, and is a very capable storyteller. Her set greatly benefits from the arrangements of pianist Bruce Barth, which cast some of these songs in surprising ways, including dark versions of "Change Partners" and "Let's Face the Music and Dance." Guitarist John Hart contributed a surprising double-time arrangement of "I'll Never Be the Same," which is usually a ballad. Sprinkled throughout the set are fine solos, including a rare Steve Wilson spot on clarinet during "Anyone Can Whistle." Other highlights include a tender version of "Little Girl Blue," a touching "Say It Isn't So," and the cheerful closer, "Something's Gotta Give." Roz Corral is impressive throughout and this is an excellent debut, easily recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
"TOP 10 JAZZ CDs OF 2005" Michael Valentine, WDNA-FM, Miami, Jazz Week, Dec. 26, 2005“Telling Tales promises great things to come from this talented, authentic singer.” - JazzReview.com"Roz Corral has wonderful pitch, a velvet tone, world-class diction and a great sense of swing. But more importantly, she really connects to everything she sings and makes it come alive and sound new. In this day of young wanna-be jazz singers, Roz Corral is the real deal."Fred HershPianist, Composer"A singer of graceful flow and buoyant spirit..."Steve Smith, Time Out New YorkCombining a natural feel for jazz with an evocative interpretation of a lyric, Roz Corral offers a fresh approach to a song. This New York City-based singer makes her recording debut with Telling Tales, a combination of standards and lesser known entries beautifully arranged and sung, accompanied by a group of modern masters. Corral is an excellent story teller and Telling Tales aptly describes the essence of her singing style. As the great jazz vocalist Mark Murphy puts it: "...Roz always goes to the heart of a song." In his liner notes, ...
