A Rare Slice of Country collects 26 radio transcriptions from programs recorded several years apart in the early and mid-'50s. The early tracks predate Wagoner's stardom and find him hewing more closely to the sound of Hank Williams. The later recordings offer more instrumental variety and some pretty elaborate vocal arrangements for transcription recordings, particularly on the excellent "Pay Day." Jim Reeves and Red Foley appear as MCs, and their banter with Wagoner and song introductions are included. Renditions of several of Wagoner's hits appear, including "A Satisfied Mind," "Eat, Drink and Be Merry (Tomorrow You'll Cry)," and "Uncle Pen." Entertaining and interesting, A Rare Slice of Country will please collectors and casual listeners. ~ Greg Adams
the first 10 titles on this 26 track collection not only reflect the Williams style, they are also exceedingly rare, unreleased & amongst the earliest studio recordings by Porter, who was greatly influenced by Hank Williams

Rare Slice Of Country CD music
$10.49 Recorded in New York, New York on April 26 & May 3, 1940. Includes liner notes by Dave Marsh & Woody Guthrie.
American folk music has produced few artists as gifted and complex as Woody Guthrie. Guthrie's talents as a singer, harmonica player, and guitar player were merely ordinary, but as a songwriter, storyteller, and provocateur Guthrie had few equals. Guthrie's genius lay in his gift for seamlessly integrating his leftist political principles into his tales of common folks. Nowhere is this gift more evident than on DUST BOWL BALLADS. The fourteen-song set, originally released in 1940 on two albums of 78s, ...

| | Conway Twitty It's Only Make Believe: The MGM Years CD (2008)
Rare Slice Of Country music CDs
$12.65 Here it is domestically -- finally -- 18 tracks of prime rockin' Conway Twitty from his first five years in the music biz. That first five years set the template for a remarkable five decades, where he nailed a charting record at one time or another. And he did it while he was alive, so Elvis doesn't count. This set, with impeccable liner notes by the great Colin Escott, begins right where it should with "It's Only Make Believe," the 1958 original hit version and still the best one among the many cover versions of the song out there. Twitty gets extra points because he co-wrote it. But there are 17 others here that reveal the tremendous range of Twitty as a singer, from the Jay Livingston and Roy Evans nugget "Mona Lisa," waxed in 1959 to his devastating rockabilly version of "Danny Boy," which was a number ten hit the same year. While everything here is awesome -- his own "Long Black Train," ...
