Pickin' On Pickin' on George Strait, Vol. 2 CD (2002)
Heart and Soul of the West CD music George Strait fans seem to appreciate the fact that he stays a little closer to his roots than some of the other new country stylists. CMH thinks so too. While a number of country legends only get "picked on" once in CMH's instrumental series, the neo-traditionalist receives a second shot with Pickin' on George Straight, Vol. 2. And since Strait has over a decade worth of hits, there's no shortage of material. There are favorites, like "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind" and "King of the Broken Hearts," and romantic fare like "You're Something Special to Me." The countrified arrangements are fairly straightforward, more concerned with melody than fancy picking. Steel guitars and fiddles add a touch of Western swing to pieces like "Stay out of My Arms" and "Big Ball's in Cow Town," while the bouncy guitar of "Straight 8 Strut," a CMH original, fits in just fine with the other material. While the Pickin' On series usually sticks to instrumentals, a vocal is added to "Murder on Music Row," an ode to the good old days when steel guitars and drinking songs dominated country music. For Strait fans, or anyone who enjoyed volume one, Pickin' on George Strait, Vol. 2 should fit the bill. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

June Christy June's Got Rhythm CD (1958)
Heart and Soul of the West album for sale Many of singer June Christy's popular Capitol albums feature her cool-toned vocals backed by an orchestra. This recording is an exception. Christy excels on a jazz-oriented set with a nonet that includes trumpeter Ed Leddy, trombonist Frank Rosolino and her husband Bob Cooper (who arranged the set) on tenor and oboe. Christy accurately called this music "intimate swing." Her versions of such songs as "I'm Glad There Is You," "My One and Only Love," "When Lights Are Low" and "Blue Moon" are tasteful, sincere and often quite memorable. ~ Scott Yanow

Jimmy Forrest Soul Street CD (1961)
Heart and Soul of the West buy CD music Oliver Nelson Big Band includes: George Barrow, Seldon Powell (tenor saxophone); Ernie Royal (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland (trombone); Chris Woods (piano); Mundell Lowe (guitar); Richard Davis (bass); Ed Shaughnessy (drums).
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1998, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
A popular yet underrated tenor saxophonist, Jimmy Forrest is featured in several different settings on this 1998 CD reissue. Forrest matches wits with fellow tenors King Curtis and Oliver Nelson on "Soul Street" (his opening phrase is a classic), plays three standards (including an effective "Sonny Boy") with a combo that includes pianist Hugh Lawson and is featured on "I Wanna Blow, Blow, Blow" with a nonet also featuring trombonist Buster Cooper. The remainder of the CD has Forrest showcased on three numbers with an octet arranged by Oliver Nelson. These tracks are of lesser interest (particularly Henry Mancini's "Experiment in Terror") but still include some fine tenor playing. With this reissue, all of Forrest's work for the Prestige and New Jazz labels has been made available on CD. ~ Scott Yanow

Deep Purple Early Years CD (2004)
Heart and Soul of the West songs The Early Years contain a combination of 14 remixes and unreleased tracks from Deep Purple's earliest lineup: Rod Evans on vocals, bassist Nick Simper, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, drummer Ian Paice, and keyboardist Jon Lord. Originally recorded in the late '60s, these songs initially showed up on the band's first three albums: Shades of Deep Purple, Deep Purple, and Book of Taliesyn. Now fans can hear alternate versions of favorites including "Kentucky Woman," "Hush," "I'm So Glad," and "Wring That Neck." This isn't the heavy metal band of Machine Head that would become known for Blackmore's classic guitar riffs and second vocalist Ian Gillan's thunderous metal shrieking. The Early Years captures a pop-oriented band transforming into the gods of metal they were about to become with 1970's Deep Purple in Rock. ~ Al Campbell

IvoryWinds Piano & Flute, Sax CD (2003)
Heart and Soul of the West songs Critic's review of the IvoryWinds CD Emotionally-charged with roots in both classical and contemporary music, Ivory Winds delivers a seamless combination of piano, flute and saxophone.
The delicate intricacies of Jack Scannell's flute zip in and out of songs like "Symphonic #1" and "Coastal Winds," depicting a picture of serenity, painted by a flute with wings. Framed nicely by Forrest Paul's deft fingers on the keyboard, it is hard to imagine such a full, rich sound coming from so few instruments.
It would be far too easy to call this recording a "reflection of nature." For while it does lend itself to visions of coastal breezes and forest streams lined with colorful birds, there is nothing in nature as sultry as the aptly-titled track, "Blues For Lovers."For fans of background music, Ivory Winds is the perfect accompaniment to a drink after a long day, a quiet afternoon alone, or a fantastic addition to a romantic dinner for two.
Ivory Winds makes its presence known without saying a word, proving that not everything from the Northwest is grunge.
