| | Jessamine Living Sound CD (1999)
1946
$12.95 Jessamine's farewell gift was actually an archival live effort from a Seattle show, the second of the group's collaborations with Pete Kember, aka Spacemen 3's Sonic Boom. Having done a split studio effort with him under the Spectrum guise, here Sonic wears his E.A.R. hat, playing everything from his favored analog keyboards to bowed cymbals and theremin. Jessamine itself concentrates on its usual instrumentation; nobody sings, and the entire performance is sequenced as seven different tracks, each presumably improvisations or newly rehearsed numbers. All are clearly part of the same overall piece, though, introduced by Sonic with his usual reverb heavy treatments and in ...
| | Miki Kono Are You Married? CD (2001)
1946
$12.05 For her third release, pianist Miki Kono reunites with bass player Rufus Reid for a session which focuses on the musicians' ability to interpret the selections on the program without extraneous and irrelevant activity. This session of sophisticated playing is absent unnecessary musical verbosity. Reid gave Kono's career a major boost by appearing on her first album in 1996. Here, Kono favors a feathery touch, reminiscent of Tommy Flanagan and Hank Jones, as she leaves lots of space between the lines. At the same time, she has that intensity and devotion to detail that verifies her classical training. Her skill as a composer is as variegated as her playing. "Just Take It Easy" is a lilting samba that contrasts with "Lullaby for Benjamin," which takes on a classical bent. Kono's affinity for classics is shown with the inclusion on the play list of the well-known J. S. Bach "Air on the G String," which fits with her feathery, light touch. After playing it straight, she launches into a slightly jazzed-up chorus, but keeping that delicate touch on the keyboards. Reid, who has played with virtually everybody ...
| | Golden Earring No Promises No Debts CD (1991) (Import) Netherlands
1946
$21.29 After the muddled crossover attempt of Grab It for a Second, Golden Earring regrouped in its native Holland to record this album. This time, lead guitarist George Kooymans took over the production reins and all the group's members collaborated to write the album. There is a poppier, hook-oriented edge to the songwriting and self-indulgent epics are downplayed in favor of tight, short songs hovering around the three-minute mark. As a result, No Promises...No Debts continues the straightforward hard rock direction of the last few albums but manages to retain Golden Earring's distinctive personality, even as it pushes the group in a more commercial, AOR direction. It overflows with well-crafted pop/rockers like "Heart Beat," a pulsating tune built on a clever stuttering guitar riff, and "Don't Stop the Show," an intense speed rocker that became a concert favorite. This album also ...
| | Lucinda Williams World Without Tears CD (2003) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Australia
1946
$17.79 WORLD WITHOUT TEARS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Righteously" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Though it's ultimately a less balladic, more stylistically varied album than its dreamy predecessor ESSENCE, WORLD WITHOUT TEARS starts out with a slow-burning, reverb-drenched ballad, but then takes a sharp turn into sensual lyricism, pounding drums, and churning guitar on "Righteously." For some time, the dominant topic of Lucinda Williams albums has been the edgy appeal of dangerous, often doomed men, and true to form there are plenty of those on WORLD WITHOUT TEARS. Witness the tragic anti-hero ...
| | Simone Kopmajer Romance CD (2005)
1946
$13.25 No one will accuse Simone Kopmajer of being one of jazz's forceful, aggressive belters. Her singing is subdued, restrained, subtle and understated -- an approach that serves the Austrian vocalist fairly well on Romance, which was produced by Todd Barkan and finds her joined by pianist John Di Martino (who handles the arrangements), acoustic bassist George Mraz, drummer Tim Horner and tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander. Improvisers who favor the sort of delicate vulnerability that characterizes the cool-toned Kopmajer have, in the past, been accused of not swinging, but Kopmajer does swing. She doesn't swing in the robust, hard-edged ...
