Since tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb had been a member of Bob Florence's Limited Edition for a long period, it seemed right that he would have Florence's orchestra record for his Bosco label at one point. The leader's six originals all have his typically distinctive and unpredictable arrangements, along with solo space for Kim Richmond on soprano, altoist Lanny Morgan, the tenors of Bob Cooper and Christlieb (who are both featured on "Jeff N' Jeff"), trumpeter Warren Luening, and baritonist Bob Efford. Worth searching for by fans of modern big bands. ~ Scott Yanow

Soaring album
$13.15 Arranger/pianist Bob Florence's release for the MAMA Foundation may very well be his finest; it certainly offers a strong sampling of his talents. Four of the ten songs are standards, and "Oceanography" is based closely on "How Deep Is the Ocean," but Florence's complex yet logical arrangements make each piece sound like it was written for the band. To name a few examples, "In a Mellow Tone" appears to be in two keys at once at times; "Laura" (normally an emotional ballad) really cooks; and "Teach Me Tonight" is so intense as to be purposely humorous in spots. Among the other highlights of this well-conceived release are Don Shelton's clarinet feature on ...
| | Bob Florence Serendipity 18 CD (1999)
Soaring CD music
$13.15 Recorded on August 27 & 28, 1998. Includes liner notes by Kirk Silsbee.
SERENDIPITY 18 won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group.
Bob Florence leads the way in the survival of the modern big band. His Limited Edition group is more than just a large ensemble; it is a living, breathing animal with a personality and imagination all its own. As the leader, Florence is the brain of the beast and operates its various limbs--or sections, you might say--with the all the fluidity and strength of any other intelligent being. On SERENDIPITY 18, Florence lets the band loose to run and jump through its paces and exercise its powerful muscles.
As a composer and arranger, Florence is at the peak of his powers here, unleashing with the burning title cut that comes out with all guns firing before shifting in and out of intricate ensemble passages. Stanley Turrentine's grooving "Sugar" is a disc highlight that showcases the band's ability to boogie on a sizzling shuffle. Shifting gears, the gentle "Tres Palabras" is a beautiful feature for Florence's often ...

This stunning release features the recording debut of Bob Brookmeyer's New Art Orchestra, made up mostly of young Europeans recruited by the valve trombonist while touring the Continent. | | Karrin Allyson Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane CD (2001)
Soaring songs
$8.75 Since John Coltrane's original 1962 BALLADS is quite delberately one of his most mainstream efforts, the contemporary jazz singer Karrin Allyson's superb recreation of this landmark session is less of a conceptual stretch than it might have been otherwise. Neither is it a mere waxworks-like simulacrum. For one, Allyson's wholesome sound is perfectly suited to these songs. In fact, it's the very innocence of ballads like "I Wish I Knew," "Too Young To Go Steady," and "Nancy (With The Laughing Face)" which lent such poignancy to the iconic saxophonist's melodically rhapsodic readings, and now spur Allyson on to such beautifully-rendered performances of her own. The singer also receives sympathetic support from the pianist James Williams, and one of John Coltrane's worthiest ...

| | Stephanie Mills Ultimate Collection CD (1999)
Soaring songs
$11.99 From 1979 to 1993, Mills' glowing voice was a frequent resident on R&B airwaves. She delivered riveting funk-disco romps and soulful ballads with equal ease and conviction. Almost all of the highlights are found here, as well as several lesser-known earlier works. The tracks are arranged in chronological order, beginning with two songs from her obscure 1975 debut album, Movin' in the Right Direction, and ending with two Top Ten numbers from 1989's gold Home. In between is a diverse selection, ranging from the gospel-rooted "I Took My Strength from You" to the pop crossover hits "Never Knew Love Like this ...
