(2 Customer Reviews)
TUBEWAY ARMY contains a 1978 live recording that was previously available only as a bootleg entitled LIVE AT THE ROXY.
Although Gary Numan is now remembered as the electronic-pop pioneer who penned the futuristic 1980 hit "Cars," Numan wasn't always a synth-rock visionary. Back in 1977, Numan and his band, Tubeway Army, crashed London's punk-rock party with an album and handful of singles that blended the raw edginess of punk with precise, riff-heavy guitar rock and Numan's surreal sci-fi lyrics.
TUBEWAY ARMY was Numan's first album-length recording and finds him just starting to develop the synthesizer-fueled sound that made him a star. While Numan colors a few tracks with a swooshing synth noodles and ominous droning sounds, most of TUBEWAY ARMY is comprised of gutsy guitar rock like "Listen to the Sirens" and "The Life Machine." Powered by surging guitar riffs and Numan's detached, robotic vocal style, the songs stand up quite well when compared to Numan's latter hits. The reissue of TUBEWAY ARMY also features 13 live tracks that were recorded at the Roxy Club in London. All of the tracks--including a searing rendition of the Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat"--predate the album and capture Numan and his band in all their ragged punkish glory.

Tubeway Army album
$10.29 REPLICAS contains six bonus tracks, which include outtakes and UK single B- sides.
Issued in 2008, this expanded edition of Gary Numan's groundbreaking 1979 synth-pop album, REPLICAS, presents an entire bonus disc of alternate takes and rarities, essentially revealing an early version of the classic Bowie-gone-robotic record. In addition to punchier renditions of "Me! I Disconnect from You" and "Are `Friends' Electric?" the second CD also includes excellent non-album tracks, most notably the coldly funky "Only a Downstat."
As early as 1977, English pop savant Gary Numan was crafting forward-looking new wave rock that was light years ahead of the punk being offered by his contemporaries. Bravely going against all current musical fashion, Numan blended science fiction themes and tales of urban paranoia ...
| | Gary Numan Telekon CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
Tubeway Army CD music
$10.15 TELEKON contains five bonus tracks which includes an 'A' side, 'B' side singles and an out-take.
1980's TELEKON was Gary Numan's first album after the surprise chart success of its predecessor THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE and "Cars," its seemingly deathless hit single. Numan could have easily created "Cars, Part II," but chose not to do so. Instead, the songs on TELEKON are spikier and almost willfully abstruse, wrapping Numan's usual J.G. Ballard and Philip K. Dick-inspired lyrics of anomie and isolation in complex synthesizer music. TELEKON often recalls some of the Krautrock bands of the '70s, particularly ...
| | Gary Numan I, Assassin CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Tubeway Army music CDs
$10.15 The 2002 Remastered version of I, ASSASSIN includes seven bonus tracks, original and expanded artwork, a 20 page booklet and extensive sleeve notes and lyrics.
After the spare and lengthy reflections and dislocated experiments of his excellent Dance album, Gary Numan made a return to a more focused approach with I, Assassin, which turned out to be his last truly great album for many years. Much of what would characterize his later music in the '80s did start to show up here, to be sure, but instead of the formless flailing all too apparent on Warriors, and especially on Berserker, Numan's work here with modern electronic funk combines his early rigor and to-the-point rhythms with a deft, creative hand in the arrangements. "White Boys and Heroes," the brilliant opening number, remains one of his best singles, featuring fretless bass work ...
| | Doors Live At The Aquarius Theatre: The First Performance CDs (2001)
Tubeway Army songs
$28.09 From the Doors' own Bright Midnight Records comes this double-disc package featuring the first of two sets performed on July 21, 1969, at the Aquarius Theater in Hollywood. The evening was billed as " Elektra Records Showcase Concert Series Presents..." and, as lead vocalist Jim Morrison announces at the outset, these homecoming performances were done for the express purpose of gathering material for a live album. Indeed, this was only the fifth concert appearance that the Doors had been able to secure in the wake of what is referred to as "the Miami incident." While at times pensive, the band members ultimately rise to the occasion as they wind through a set of hits and fan favorites, as well as a few compositions that would have been previously unheard by this audience. The set ...
| | Yes Tales From Topographic Oceans CDs (1974) Bonus Tracks
Tubeway Army album
$11.89 For prog rock's detractors, Yes's TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS is the genre's nadir. For admirers it is an artistic pinnacle. Whichever camp you're in, it is hard to deny the sheer chutzpah necessary to undertake this sprawling epic. Though broken up into four sections, TALES greeted 1973 listeners as a single composition spread across four sides of a double album. This was unprecedented in the world of mainstream rock. For the band, it was the closest they would ever come to a true fusion of classical structures and themes with rock-oriented instrumentation and sensibilities.
The lyrics are typically elliptical and spiritually oriented, and many a bad trip was probably launched by trying to interpret them. The real pleasure of this album lies in the elaborately ...

| | Forty Foot Echo CD (2003)
Tubeway Army CD music
$23.29 Forty Foot Echo mines territory similar to Creed or Lifehouse on its Hollywood debut, vacillating between chunky post-grunge rockers and uplifting, righteous power ballads that are all treated with the glimmering sheen that is mixer Tom Lord-Alge's trademark. "Weakness" lurches along with plenty of gritty guitar chug, but vocalist Murray Yates is accompanied by processed, robot versions of himself throughout, giving the song the same articulated quality that's become the dominant sound of loud rock in the years since Creed's popular breakthrough. Then there's "Save Me," an uplifting rocker dominated by self-referential, entirely blasé lyrics like "Sit around ...
