| | Fall This Nation's Saving Grace CD Fall Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
As stubbornly maverick as ever, the Fall's tenth album hinges on their now-accustomed dissonance, into which a tighter, commercial edge was introduced. New guitarist Brix Smith, wife of leader Mark E., added a partly melodious sheen that brought an air of 60s subculture to the group's post-industrial rattle. Nothing was sacrificed in the process and while "Bombast" hurtles with a vicious power, talismen Can were acknowledged in "I Am Damo Suzuki," the name of the German band's Japan-born singer. Mark Smith towers over the proceedings, his voice prowling about the music, enhancing its intensity. This album shows the Fall extending stylistic barriers without sacrificing their individuality.

This Nation's Saving Grace
$17.69 Grupo Jazz Tumbao is a septet dedicated to the performance of original Latin Jazz, Bebop latin-style, and classic compositions from the masters of Cuban and Nuyorican Jazz. If you've ever heard the young tenor giant David Sánchez, or Jerry Gonzalez and Fort Apache, you'll know where Grupo Jazz Tumbao is coming from. Of course, they can't forget the Dizzy Gillespie - Chano Pozo experiments of the 1940's that originally defined this great style. Grupo Jazz Tumbao seems to be one of the few groups west of New York playing with this perspective. Its members are all accomplished musicians on the Jazz and Latin music scenes in Vancouver, Canada, and have travelled and studied extensively to perfect their craft. Grupo Jazz Tumbao was formed in January 1997 by, bassist/composer Allan Johnston and trombonist/composer Brian Harding. They'd been playing together in several jazz and latin groups, and had both been serious students of the music (both having spent time in Puerto Rico and Cuba). Finding they had a similar musical vision, and spurred by a deadline for submission to the Vancouver International Jazz Festival the following week, they called up a few good friends who were also ...
| | Animals Essential CD (1990) (Import) Australia
This Nation's Saving Grace
$14.45 The main problem with this Australian compilation is its subtitle, "A Decade of Rock Blues." Fans of the Animals will be aware that the group wasn't actually around for anything like a decade, but the tenure of the unit known as Eric Burdon & the Animals was even shorter, stretching only from the fall of 1966 to the end of 1968, and the length of time covered by the recordings on this disc is even shorter. Then there is the phrase "Rock Blues." Actually, Burdon & the Animals had shifted musical styles by this point. So, to be accurate, the subtitle of this album would have to read "18 Months of Psychedelic Rock." By that measure, however, it really does include the short-lived unit's essential ...
