All songs written by members of the B Sharp Jazz Quartet except "Naima" (John Coltrane).
The 1994 debut by the B Sharp Jazz Quartet is quite impressive. The L.A.-based group, whose roots are in hard bop while being very open to the influences of the avant-garde, performs nine originals by bandmembers, plus John Coltrane's "Naima." Comprised of drummer Herb Graham, Jr., saxophonist Randall Willis, pianist Eliot Douglass, and bassist Reggie Carson, the quartet creates a wide-ranging and colorful set that is well worth picking up. ~ Scott Yanow

B Sharp Jazz Quartet album
$9.95 Principally recorded at Arlyn Studios and GEM/Lonestar Studios, Austin, Texas. Includes liner notes by Michael Point and Bruce Iglaur.
Louisiana-born and Texas-toughened, Brooks (66), Hunter (68), and Walker (62) show what blues peers can do in what seem to be peaking years. There are three numbers where all three go full tilt together; the rest of the material varies in personnel, group and solo emphasis. The distinctive, gutsy voice of Brooks, Walker's loping guitar lines with his slighly rough, seasoned voice, and the riveting presence of Walker on all counts, musically and vocally, are showcased to consistently satisfying levels. Of the 15 cuts, there are a handful of rockers and boogies, a few pure soul tunes and ballads, a jump blues, a Cajun calypso, and some straight blues -- something for everyone. The hard-swinging "Street Walking Woman" and the slower shuffle "Feel Good Doin' Bad" are great musically, if lacking in message. Walker gets a back-to-back showcase on "I Can't Stand It No More/I Met the Blues in Person," and he tears it up. Brooks pleads and shouts on "This Should Go On Forever," while Hunter's highlights are the cautious "Alligators Around My Door" and the B.B. King cop on "Quit My Baby." Score ...
| | George Benson Greatest Hits Of All CD (2003) Remastered
B Sharp Jazz Quartet CD music
$10.19 Recorded between 1976 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Don Heckman.
Basically, this "greatest hits of all" is simply that: the highest-charting tracks in George Benson's long career -- highest-charting pop and adult contemporary tracks, that is. Benson had been on the scene over a decade before signing with Warner Bros., and many of his jukebox and R&B hits were recorded for Creed Taylor's CTI label. Some of Benson's recorded work that held those hits has been reissued in the past two years. Of the Warner material, they have gauged success by chart placement -- not sales, not radio play, not artist choice. Therefore, while the stellar tracks from Breezin', namely "This Masquerade," which charted at number one on pop and R&B in Billboard, and its follow-up, the album's title track, kick the album off along with "On Broadway" and "The Greatest Love of All." But there are many stops along the way to the present from that 1976 issue, such as Benson's singularly ...

| | Herb Alpert What Now My Love CD (1966) Remastered; Special Edition
B Sharp Jazz Quartet songs
$9.99 With this album, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass settle into their hitmaking groove, the once strikingly eclectic elements of Dixieland, pop, rock, and mariachi becoming more smoothly integrated within Alpert's infectious "Ameriachi" blend. They sound more like a band now; along with Alpert's now-indelibly stamped trumpet sound, we can recognize jazzman John Pisano's distinctive rhythm guitar, Lou Pagani's piano, the droll Bob Edmondson's dulcet trombone, etc. Pisano, who debuted as a composer on Going Places, comes up with a memorably whistleable song "So What's New," and the rest of Alpert's songwriting brigade (Ervan Coleman, Julius Wechter and Sol Lake) chime in with some lively, catchy tunes. There is also an assortment of pop, film, and Broadway standards of the day, all impeccably arranged by Alpert, whose production instincts grew sharper and surer with every release. Result: another hugely entertaining hit ...
| | Bebel Gilberto All In One CD (2009)
B Sharp Jazz Quartet album
$12.05 With ALL IN ONE, Bebel Gilberto made her home at Verve, which is not just an auspicious label for music but also the home of some of the best Brazilian records of all time--by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto (who is no relation, although she was married to Bebel's father before Bebel's birth), Stan Getz, and, of course, her father, Joao Gilberto. It's obvious Gilberto is well aware of this: the cover is reminiscent of an Astrud Gilberto album and she sings a version of "Bim Bom," which was written by her father and is known popularly for Astrud's version (what's more, it features the piano work ...

As the name implies, these sides reflect the influence of the tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, who composed all the selections except two. Performing these works is the front line of Chet Baker, Art Pepper, and Phil Urso. They are supported by the working trio led by bassist Curtis Counce that includes the unconventional pianist Carl Perkins and the underrated drummer Larence Marable.
Baker and Pepper make a powerful team, each rising to the task of complimenting the other. For his part, Baker displays a more rhythmic side on these mostly ...
