Arranger/pianist Bob Florence's release for the MAMA Foundation may very well be his finest; it certainly offers a strong sampling of his talents. Four of the ten songs are standards, and "Oceanography" is based closely on "How Deep Is the Ocean," but Florence's complex yet logical arrangements make each piece sound like it was written for the band. To name a few examples, "In a Mellow Tone" appears to be in two keys at once at times; "Laura" (normally an emotional ballad) really cooks; and "Teach Me Tonight" is so intense as to be purposely humorous in spots. Among the other highlights of this well-conceived release are Don Shelton's clarinet feature on "Shimmer," the competitive interplay between Dick Mitchell and Terry Harrington throughout "Tenors, Anyone?," and the fluency of trombonist Bob McChesney on "In a Mellow Tone." The ensembles are consistently clean, exciting, and remarkably relaxed, considering how tricky some of the charts must be. This CD offers modern big band jazz at its best. ~ Scott Yanow
twelve time GRAMMY nominee & two time EMMY award winner, described as a modern-day Ellington, composer, arranger & band leader who never forgot how to swing

JazzTimes (2/96, p.103) - "...the section work throughout is exemplary, but it is the quality of Florence's writing...that explains the long-standing devotion of his men." With All The Bells And Whistles Music Bob Florence With All The Bells And Whistles Songs | 1. | Laura |

$13.45 Long one of the top arrangers in jazz, Bob Florence contributed seven inventive charts to five of his originals and two standards on this swinging, yet often complex, set and also takes "Never Let Me Go" as a sensitive piano solo. "Dukeisms," a lengthy piece commissioned to celebrate Duke Ellington's 100th birthday in 1999, has quotes from five Ellington pieces. Other selections include the cooking blues "Nerve Endings" (highlighted by Carl Saunders' trumpet solo), a sensitive reworking of "Chelsea Bridge," a fairly abstract "Kissing Bug," trumpeter Steve Huffsteter's ...

With All The Bells And Whistles music CDs
$14.79 IN & OUT was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album by an Individual or Group.
Algerian born pianist Solal and American expatriate tenor saxophonist Griffin are perfectly matched in this series of duets, brilliant beyond compare and witty to the nth degree. Both are in their seventies and playing better than ever. Griffin has everything going for him in terms of experience, restraint, emotional depth, and potential explosiveness. Solal, an unsung hero in jazz, shows the years that have passed did not sour him on concepts of stark romanticism, improvisational risk taking, or fear of cutting loose; he clearly can do it all. These eight selections are bookmarked by only two standards: the easily swung 4/4 evergreen "You Stepped out of a Dream" where Griffin's tender, lean bop lines are followed by Solal, step by step, then traded off near the end, and the Thelonious Monk icon "Well, You Needn't" that has Griffin honking a bit, Solal even more angular and at times dour. The two are quite playful on this one, messing around delightfully. Griffin penned three of these. The half-speed blues title cut is ...

With All The Bells And Whistles songs
$9.99 Forget about overstating the importance of Jerry Lee Lewis -- it can't be done. There were only ten initial inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and he was one of them. Without his influence, it's impossible to say where the music would have headed, but we're all damn lucky it didn't go there. Sun Records was, ...
