On their third release for the MAMA Foundation, the B Sharp Jazz Quartet was clearly looking to stretch their appeal beyond a jazz audience. The opening and closing verbal narrations are rather forgettable if harmless and a few of the numbers are more groove-oriented than one might expect. However the band has not given up its left-of-center nature and there are plenty of stirring improvisations by Randall Willis (doubling on tenor and soprano) and pianist-organist Rodney Lee while bassist Osama Afifi and drummer Herb Graham Jr. (who co-leads the group with Willis) offer fine support. Most memorable are such originals as "Twelve Tone Blue," "How Dare You," "Church Bells" and the brooding "Nami." ~ Scott Yanow

JazzTimes (2/97, p.102) - "...The musical concept is versatile, free-flowing and heavily rhythmic, accented by numerous superb solos....Absolutely, take this one home." Option (11-12/96, p.96) - "...owes its sound to an Art Blakey-derived, hard-bop springboard, but it reaches into the innovations of the Last Poets, Coltrane, the soul jazz movement and of late '60s Miles Davis....essentially acoustic, the quartet dances around with contemporary urban rhythms..." Searching For The One album
$13.69 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American ...
| | Jeff Hamilton Symbiosis CD (2009)
Searching For The One CD music
$12.59 Jeff Hamilton's recordings have always been focused as straight-ahead and mainstream as your typical superhighway, with occasional time for rest stops, gassing up, and sleepovers. While always a good listen, Hamilton and his non-stop rotation of up-and-coming pianists and bassists never really pushed the envelope, staying the course set by his mentor, the late, great bassist Ray Brown, and other California-based coolsters. With Symbiosis, though, there's a change in the weather with the addition ...

Searching For The One album
$7.59 A TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON was originally conceived as the soundtrack for a documentary on the life of the first African American heavyweight boxing champion, but the album stands on its own as one of the most brilliant, compelling fusion recordings ever made. This is due in large part to the increasing influence of rock and funk on Miles's aesthetic, to the superb musicians (including Davis himself-- who turns in some stunningly vigorous solos), and in part to the production skills of Teo Macero, who collaged ...
| | Spyro Gyra Road Scholars CD (1997)
Searching For The One CD music
$12.65 If you don't like Lite Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, Instrumental Pop, whatever you want to call it; stuff that wouldn't sound out of place in between David Sanborn and Kenny G on your local radio station, you probably shouldn't even be reading this far, because Spyro Gyra are avatars of the style. If their bag is your bag, however, you can feel comfortable diving right in to the sonic tapestry that is ROAD SCHOLARS. The band's synth-driven instrumental assault, led by keyboardist Tom Schuman, has remained consistent throughout their years of recording and ...
