A set of original Cleveland tunes and traditional hymns done in the choir format he pioneered with The Angelic Choir of New Jersey. This live recording, done with crude technology, is helped somewhat by the high-fidelity pressing. It includes "I Had a Talk with God" and "I'll Wear a Crown." Cleveland's gruff vocals appear on most cuts. ~ Bil Carpenter

$14.35 A posthumous Grammy winner, this 1990 album by the most influential male gospel performer of the post-war era was recorded live, which is both its strength and its weakness. As expected, the performances--either by the gruff-voiced Cleveland, the Southern California Community Choir, or guest vocalists Herman Jones and Lavora Wilson (heard at their sanctified ...

Peace Be Still music CDs
$13.39 Documenting a live recording from Seattle's Jazz Alley, this disc brings together the intriguing duo of vocal experimentalist Jay Clayton and Don Lanphere whose saxophone is grounded in bop. As it turns out, the session is more than intriguing, it is an entertaining 70 minutes of exciting, unadulterated jazz by outstanding performers. Unlike many albums where the singer does a chorus and then the sax player comes for one, with the singer cleaning up, on this set Clayton uses her voice as an instrument playing in unison with Lanphere's saxophone, whether it be the tenor, alto or soprano. The album legitimately could have been subtitled "Sonatas for Voice and Saxophone," recognizing that there is also a sonata for voice and flute, that being "My Silent Love." Clayton has an extraordinary clear voice which allows you to hear and appreciate her lyrical interpretations; there's no mumbling here. Her pitch is perfect and her phrasing impeccable. Like most good jazz vocalists, she takes risks, but not just for the sake of doing so. They make sense within the context of the music and the arrangements. No song captures the performing philosophy more than the Hammerstein/Romberg operetta classic, "Softly as in a Morning ...

$11.69 George Thorogood's first album for a major label became his commercial breakthrough precisely because it was business as usual. Again, it's a brash, rowdy take on the blues that owes as much to '60s garage bands and punk as it does to Muddy Waters. That connection is made particularly explicit here via a stomping take on the Human Beinz' '60s punk classic "Nobody But Me," itself a radical deconstruction of the Isely Brothers' original.
The title tune, of course, has become Hollywood's leading signifier of a character's toughness--pretty funny if you've ever seen the transparently goofy Thorogood mugging his way through the song on MTV. Elsewhere on the album, he renders buzz-saw homage to Chuck Berry and John Lee Hooker. But the album's most interesting moment comes on the sleazy sounding, dirge-like "As the Years Go Passing ...
