Economy of Motion is a pretty big step from 1997's All Lingo's Clamor EP in terms of pure aggression and abrasion -- Colosamite runs on 10 throughout the record, laying out hardcore noise and screamy chaos and anchoring them with Nick Sakes' (Dazzling Killmen) harsh vocals. Even compared to the roughness of Colosamite's previous releases, the record is on-the-edge and over-the-top -- the band may tone down its amplitude and power at points, but even these more focused segments are just as fractured as Colasamite's most aggressive work-outs. Of course, this makes the record slightly less listenable than previous releases like All Lingo's Clamor -- but this sort of unsettling deconstruction is pretty much the point of Colosamite. Meaning that Economy of Motion is probably their finest record to this point. ~ Nitsuh Abebe

The Wire (1/99, p.59) - "...switches between continuous slow, ultra basic vamps and jagged, agitated rough houses, spat out by a 3 guitar and drums line-up augmented here and there by some robust trumpet and baritone sax..." CMJ (11/09/98, p.22) - "...odd time signature-driven noisecore bleeds into placid sound-art, which shifts into a faux-free jazz without pause..." | | Hella Hold Your Horse Is CD (2002)
Economy Of Motion music CDs
$12.65 Very few groups have the ability to pull off instrumentals as abstract, as unforgettably chaotic, or as decidedly original as does Hella. The spazz-core style contained within the nine tracks of Hold Your Horse Is is a beauty to behold, yet is certainly not for the meek or close-minded. It should be known that these nine songs are purely instrumentals, that no vocalization is needed, and that no matter what you have heard before, Hella is bound to make an impression you won't soon forget. The enjoyable cataclysm of sound seems to come from a whole orchestra of musicians, yet this wild album was in fact created by only two people, Spencer Selm and Zach Hill. Drawing on classic rock, jazz, electronica, and hundreds of other influences that would take too long to list, Hella has perhaps outdone itself, as Hold Your Horse Is happens to be an album there simply could never be a sequel to. Those familiar with the progressive rock group Dredg may enjoy the hectic sonatas conjured up by Hella, as it is certainly an artistic vision that launches this duo's creative force to ...
| | Lightning Bolt Wonderful Rainbow CD (2003)
Economy Of Motion songs
$12.95 In case its unique brand of sonic assault and battery didn't leave you lying dead on the floor with your spleen poking halfway out your gaping mouth the first time around, Lightning Bolt is back for a second strafing run on your sense of mental and musical balance. Think you're up for it? Well, maybe you are, but only if you leave your volume knob down between two and three. It's hard to believe that all this noise is made by only a guitarist and a drummer, and it's sometimes even harder to believe that no electronic manipulation is involved. But however it is that they ...
| | Hella Church Gone Wild/Chirpin Hard CDs (2005) Digipak
Economy Of Motion album
$13.39 This is kind of the noisy indie rock equivalent to OutKast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below: Hella's Church Gone Wild/Chirpin' Hard is a two-CD set comprised of two solo albums, one each by guitarist Spencer Seim and drummer Zach Hill. Seim's disc is Chirpin' Hard, which is the more immediately accessible of the pair and certainly the one that's closest to the standard Hella template: 12 tracks of eccentric but surprisingly enjoyable instrumental math rock, heavy on the buzzing lo-fi keyboards and ...

Although Duke Ellington passed away on May 24, 1974, this posthumous effort can be thought of as his orchestra's final record. Duke's son Mercer took over the big band and at least for a short time still had some surviving veterans ...
