All songs written by members of Urge Overkill except "Emmaline" (Brown/Wilson).
While displaying an excess of rock-star histrionics and cheeky, lounge-lizard postures, Chicago's Urge Overkill produced some excellent guitar rock during its short reign in the late 1980s and early '90s, and 1991's THE SUPERSONIC STORYBOOK--the band's third album for Touch & Go Records--shows UO hitting its stride. Although Urge Overkill was in many ways a product of the Chicago underground of the era, an undisguised love of '70s classic rock and arena bombast set them apart from bands like the Jesus Lizard and Naked Raygun. Opening tracks "The Kids Are Insane" and "The Candidate" are full of fat arena-rock riffs and melodic hooks that have more in common with Kiss and Cheap Trick than with punk, while the wah-pedal freak-out of "Bionic Revolution" hits a funk-rock groove worthy of James Brown.
Urge Overkill's MO was to rescue rock from the self-righteousness of punk and restore it to its rightful place on the stereos of Saturday night revelers. And while that mission was certainly stated with a heavy dose of irony, Urge Overkill possessed a genuine love of the very rock music that the indie community was allegedly against. On THE SUPERSONIC STORYBOOK, the irony and the love are perfectly simpatico, and the result is a lost gem of the '90s rock revolution.

Before they were the wide-collared embodiment of the '70s rock super-id in the post-grunge nation, Urge Overkill were as garagey as most of their '80s neighbors in the indie-mill. The CD issue of AMERICRUISER/JESUS URGE SUPERSTAR, their first two full-length releases, shows off this hard-rocking side of the band. For those who only jumped on ...
| | Rory Gallagher Deuce CD (1971) Germany; Remastered
Supersonic Storybook songs
$9.39 Released in November 1971, just six months after his solo debut, Rory Gallagher's second album was the summation of all that he'd promised in the wake of Taste's collapse, and the blueprint for most of what he'd accomplish over the next two years of recording. Largely overlooked by posterity's haste to canonize his next album, Live in Europe, Deuce finds Gallagher torn between the earthy R&B of "Used to Be," a gritty blues fed through by some viciously unrestrained guitar playing, and the jokey, country-billy badinage of "Don't ...

Supersonic Storybook CD music
$15.15 One gets the sense that a lot of careful work went into making Coastlines the immaculately shimmering creation that it is, which is sort of a shame considering how difficult it is to concentrate on while it's actually playing. You could say that that's precisely the point, that this is music deliberately resistant to concrete awareness, its soft-focus surfaces designed to deflect attention away from itself and from anything else that might be going on. But there's a fuzzy line between getting lost in the music -- something these ...
