All songs written by Negative Approach except "Chaos" (McCourt/Hodges/ Harmer), "Never Surrender" (Blitz), and "I Got A Right" (Pop/Williamson).
TOTAL RECALL contains all of Negative Approach's previously released material, including the PROCESS OF ELIMINATION EP, the NEGATIVE APPROACH EP, and the TIED DOWN LP, as well as previously unreleased live and demo tracks.
Total Recall is Negative Approach's complete discography -- essential '80s hardcore with an impact that will always feel extreme. Minor Threat and Bad Brains traveled similar loud/fast ground, but NA were a direct line to pure hate and anger. The band never sounds cartoonish, just stripped-down and mean, a sound that could have only come from Detroit. "Can't Tell No One," "Nothing," and just about every other studio track are hardcore anthems waiting to be discovered by the next confused kid who cannot stand a repressive world. The only lacking material on Total Recall comes from the live shows that round out the release. This is due to poor sound quality that makes them barely listenable, though the Stooges and Blitz covers are of historical note. The songs culled from the Touch and Go seven inch, the Process of Elimination compilation, and the Tied Down twelve inch however, are a powerful enough document to make Negative Approach matter well beyond the times that produced them. ~ Matthew Kantor
Live tracks recorded at the Freezer Theater and the Clubhouse, Detroit, Michigan and at the Paradise Club, Boston, Massachusetts between 1982 and 1984. Includes liner notes by Tesco Vee.
Negative Approach: John Brannon (vocals), Rob McCulloch (guitar), Graham McCulloch (bass), OP Moore (drums).
Alternative Press (1/93, p.66) - "...Negative Approach still consistently sound at every moment just as tightly stressed and hateful as you ever felt during the very worst days of adolescence..." Total Recall songs

On GROUP SEX, the Circle Jerks' second full-length album, the band makes no great changes in its musical style. On the other hand, there really was no need for revision. Keith Morris (also an early vocalist for Black Flag) and his band mates had pretty much hit the nail on the head the first time out (WILD IN THE STREETS, appended to GROUP on some CD editions). The Jerks play the sort of very fast and very snotty punk rock--complete with thin, weedy vocals--that eventually became all the rage with such chart-topping bands as Green Day, the Offspring, and No Doubt.
As their name and the album title would suggest, the Circle Jerks are not a subtle band. "I Just Want Some Skank" and "World Up My Ass" stand as further examples of their in-your-face lewdness. Standout ...
| | Verbal Abuse Just An American Band CD (1996)
Total Recall album
$13.15 In 1983 and 1984, punk was an idiom that thrived on rawness and gut-level emotion; it was rock & roll at its most primal and basic -- and these hot-blooded, inspired performances are about as primal as it gets. It isn't hard to understand why the band was called Verbal Abuse; songs like "I Hate You," "Disintegration" and "Leeches" rival Black Flag when it comes to having antisocial lyrics. Although original material dominates the CD, there a few noteworthy covers -- including a live performance of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" and an unlikely version of Grand Funk's "We're an American Band." Anyone who appreciates the early-'80s output of Black Flag, Fear or the Circle Jerks is advised to give Just an American Band a close listen. ~ Alex Henderson
