Before, listening to Don Caballero felt similar to being beaten over the head with a huge baseball bat of pure audible genius: often too overwhelming and complicated for your average music listener to listen to for very long, much less understand. With American Don, it seems that the baseball bat has been traded in for a pillow, and instead of beating they are slowly smothering. Much of the aggressive bite of the music has been simmered out: distortion is much more rare, time changes have been minimized, even the notoriously breakneck drumming of Damon Che has been sedated. The only piece that seems most similar to the styles they had established before is the extremely quirky and choppy "Details on How to Get ICEMAN on Your License Plate"; the rest only briefly moves through familiar places, instead choosing to uproot and shapeshift in listeners' collective faces. Those familiar with Ian and Eric's other band Storm & Stress might also notice a bit of flowing over from the techniques and styles on their records.
As always, innovation, progression, and surprise seem to be a significant part of the Don Caballerian musical mindset; something is always surfacing out of unexpected dimensions and throwing you miles from where you thought you were heading. This is complicated and explosive. This is American Don: an eloquently stuttered statement of instability and grace all at once. ~ Blake Butler

Spin (12/00, p.230) - 7 out of 10 - "...Lovely, complex stuff. This is post-rock in the most literal sense: another Midwestern art band abandoning brawn for beauty." Alternative Press (12/00, p.95) - 4 out of 5 - "...The planet's greatest all-instrumental rock band....[hey] not only make 3 instruments sound like 9, they pack more 'oomph' into this meager space than most bands twice their size..." Don Caballero American Don Songs American Don Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Does This Album Even Need A Review? It is a rare thing to find anything said about this band that would be considered unfavorable. Having played in a band with guitarist Ian Williams before he joined Damon Che's outfit, I have a personal connection with Don Caballero that certainly endears them to me. And approaching a Don Caballero album seems to take a certain discipline at times, like listening to classical music even. So I conducted an experiment today; I listened to American Don on repeat all day long. And much to my surprize, as I am even now listening to it for possibly the 12th time today, I AM NOT SICK OF HEARING IT!!!! This is THE ONLY - I repeat, ONLY album that I have ever been able to do that with. Others have come close, but this one takes the cake. I am so proud of these guys. I give it five stars, not to say that it is their best work to date, but that their work is the best to date, PERIOD. Way to go Don! Submitted by raqvb (silver spring, MD) Was This Review Helpful? | | Don Caballero 2 CD (1995)
American Don CD music
$12.69 The liner notes speak it plain -- "Don Caballero is rock not jazz, Don Caballero is free from solos." But not from complex, ever evolving compositions that never, ever forget to crank up the amps and riff along. The post-rock canard that the group was labeled with somewhere along the line doesn't really make sense, and the math rock label is even more limiting -- too bloodless. If a comparison had to be made or a link established, try Drive Like Jehu, but without vocals. The Williams/Banfield guitar team knows exactly how to play off each other, trading notes, establishing parallel melodies, and hitting full crunch like an evolving beast. Che, meanwhile, sits behind it all and directs everything with equal power and skill. In mainstream terms, the Smashing Pumpkins' Jimmy Chamberlin got the '90s kudos for being a power rock drummer with the skills and fluidity of jazz, but Che is clearly equally skilled, as this album makes perfectly clear. An eight-track release, it splits evenly between shorter and longer pieces, each ...

American Don CD music
$12.25 If modern day indie music appears to consist of an endless queue of groups that are either bland emo retreads or glitzy disco punkers, it is then that much more refreshing to encounter a band like Battles. With a lineage that consists of some of indie rock's most accomplished musicians, Battles is a veritable neo-prog supergroup, though one that embraces the possibilities of technology used in tandem with instrumental virtuosity.

| | Lonely Weekends: The Very Best Of Charlie Rich CD (1999)
American Don music CDs
$10.59 This is a great collection for anyone interested Charlie Rich's early career at Sun Records. The ardent fan may opt for Bear Records' mammoth, 90-song Complete Charlie Rich Sun Collection, but the 23 tracks on Collectables' Lonely Weekends: The Very Best of Charlie Rich also provides an effective overview of Rich's varied repertoire from the late '50s and early '60s. Rich was, in many ways, the most talented member of Sam Phillips' Sun roster, which also included "Million Dollar Quartet" icons Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash. Rich not only furnished hits for Lewis ("Breakup") and Cash ("The Ways of a Woman in Love") but also was an accomplished jazz pianist and able ...
