Scott "Hank" Chase (percussion). Recorded at Alex The Great Recording, Nashville, Tennessee on July 4, 1995. Personnel: Kurt Wagner (vocals, guitar); Paul Niehaus (slide guitar); Deanna Varagona (baritone saxophone); Hank Tilbury (synthesizer, glockenspiel); Allen Lowrey, Paul Burch (drums). Audio Mixers: Hank; Kurt Wagner. Recording information: Alex The Great Studios, Nashville, TN. In hindsight, the seven-track Hank EP would seem to herald the conclusion of Lambchop's "straight" country period -- assuming, of course, that songs with titles like "Poor Bastard" and "I Sucked My Boss' Dick" could ever be considered pure country in the first place. The impossibly lush production which buoys tracks like "I'm a Stranger Here" and the gorgeous "Blame It on the Brunettes" screams Billy Sherrill, however, and the melancholia which permeates the disc is the stuff of which endless nights in smoky honky-tonks are made; ultimately, in their own singularly bizarre way, Lambchop has made what might just fly in under the radar as a classic country record, provided no one listens too closely. Of course, with the subsequent Thriller, they produced the most dissonant and difficult album of their career, kissing fame and fortune goodbye forever. Nashville's loss, not ours. ~ Jason Ankeny This is music by which to drift down river, cowboy hat on head, open beer in hand. Weeping steel guitars, subtle percussion, dreamy, reverbed guitar lines, and Kurt Wagner's frail, weary voice all combine to create a gentle, though surprisingly compelling, investigation of the place where country/folk meets clever, almost psychedelic atmospherics. The HANK EP distills the group's aesthetic into six textured, tasty cuts. While Lambchop's finely honed sense of irony strays a little too close to yuk-yuk territory (as in the seventh track throwaway, "I Sucked My Boss's Dick"), their shortcomings are counterbalanced by an ability to create poignant and often poetic vignettes. Such songs as "I'm A Stranger Here" and "Blame It On The Brunettes" paint heartbreaking stories in warm, muted colors and showcase the band at their best.Q (8/96, p.122) - 3 Stars - Good - "Lambchop's large line-up, minimal country-tinged drawl and general earthiness has captured some attention recently....the end result is surprisingly powerful with Kurt Wagner's vocal developing a world-weary storytelling edge." Uncut (p.114) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] peculiar combination of the smoothly contemporary and the creakily archaic." Option (9-10/96, p.119) - "...[the] tunes are heartbreakers every one, but...this uninterrupted bout of melancholy makes for a satisfying and uplifting listen....songs drift lazily along in a haze of understated guitars, off-key horns and beats that sound like they were recorded in a basement two houses down..." Melody Maker (8/6/86, p.46) - "...They just seep through the walls and gently insinuate themselves into your life, the haziest mass of steel guitar curlicues and muffled percussion hovering by the windows, Kurt Wagner singing like NASHVILLE SKYLINE-era Dylan or Vic Chesnutt. You can't tire of such quiet persuasion..." NME (Magazine) (7/6/96, p.37) - 8 (out of 10) - "...[HANK] retains all the components which made...such a brilliant record: the droning steel guitars, the barely audible whisper of Kurt Wagner and the sedately maudlin songs which seemingly take an eternity to unfold..." Hank
$10.59 A mix of post-modernism and straight (not roots) country music. The spooky organ fills, saxes, clarinets, and cello make this sound at times like the Art Ensemble of Chicago-as-country-band. Kurt Wagner's morose, resigned lyrics and dry, almost spoken delivery can get hard to take over the course of the hour-plus disc. 16 tracks. Merge.1994.

Following in the tradition of the brilliant "Cigaretiquette" single, which immediately preceded it, Thriller moves Lambchop sharply away from their signature alt-countrypolitan sound, pushing instead toward a punchier, noisier aesthetic; borrowing its title from the best-selling album of all time and devoting no less than three of its eight tracks ...

| | Caroline Herring Twilight CD (2001)
Hank
$12.19 Caroline Herring is an exciting addition to the American roots music scene. Her debut album "Twilight" combines artful songwriting with a voice that could well take its place alongside some of the most beloved female singers in American traditional music.Herring is a native of Canton, Mississippi, and "Twilight" reflects her deep southern roots, from the songs themselves to the photograph which graces the album's cover, a contribution from the heralded photographer Jack Spencer. Herring's mature songwriting evokes the rich, complicated themes of the southern literary giants. "Emma", for example, a mysterious ballad of a daughter's love for her father, could be a Flannery O'Conner short story set to music. "Standing in the Water", a distillation of one woman's personal struggle with the haunted history of slavery, sounds like something straight out of Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County. There's also the inspiring "Wise Woman", a kind of rural, nineteenth century take on a woman who could literally bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan. Most young songwriters who tackle such heavy subjects end up drowning under the weight of their own pretension. Yet Herring has an intuitive knack for staying out of the way as a songwriter- letting the characters speak for themselves, fitting the language to a given setting so that, by the end, the listener is struck by the incredible authenticity of both the songs and the singer. As for how these songs sound, Herring refuses to be pigeonholed. From the classic patsy Cline sound of "Devil Made a Mess", through the bluegrass romp "Carolina Moon", and on to the more folk-inspired sound of "Delta Highway", these songs are as diverse as the southern culture and landscape of which Herring writes.
Personnel includes: Caroline Herring (vocals, guitar); Jeff Plankenhorn (dobro); Bryn Bright (cello, acoustic bass, background vocals); Paul Pearcy (drums, percussion). Recorded at Hill On The Moon Studios, Austin, Texas. There's ...

| | Darrell Scott Live In NC CD (2005)
Hank
$13.85 Darrell Scott's new "Live in NC" recalls the record -buyer's rush I felt mail-ordering a couple of limited edition CDs some years ago from Richard Thompson's website. They captured the great singer/songwriter guitarist performing electrically and acoustically with bassist Danny Thompson (no relation). The discs did a fine job conveying how these two men command a stage like a couple of ancient English monarchs (wise and benevolent ones, of course) reincarnated as stringed instrument musicians. Could the parallels be any clearer? "Live in NC" pairs Scott, a stateside wizard of guitar and song, with Danny's bass and the syncopated, deeply grooved timekeeping of drummer Kenny Malone. Like Richard Thompson, Scott writes beautifully, deeply informed by his native folk culture and musical druids. He's a powerhouse singer, and whether by himself or, as here, with gifted collaborators, he can take both acoustic and electric guitar to dazzling, unexpected heights of flat-out jamming. Matching wits and intensity with Danny Thompson might intimidate some (this is a heavily credentialed veteran who practiced ten hours a day as a young comer), but Scott proves here what those who've followed his rise through Americana and country songwriting already know-that he toiled for years playing long hours in bars and on endless road swings, making the rent, finding himself, and honing the precision and passion you hear in his playing today. Even a dedicated music freak could go a year without finding a show this good to see in person. Kenny Malone's vast experience in Nashville studios has ripened into subtlety, not showiness, on the skins. Danny's tone ...
| | Karen Tobin That's What You Get CD (2003)
Hank
$15.19 The powerful, sensitive singer, songwriter, Karen Tobin, is a veteran of the Los Angeles Country Music scene and former recording artist with Arista Records - New York, and Atlantic Records - Nashville. Ms. Tobin has been compared with such luminaries of the female vocalist elite as Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. Her new release is on her own label Sunnyland Productions.A fan once said of her "She displays control and versatility with her mezzo-soprano vocal style. She's got just right amount of emotion in her performances to make you want to hear more." "Karen sings the heart right out of her chest." "Ms. Tobin wails out a shivering mountain edged soprano that's laced with a powerhouse of control and emotion"-- Cash Box." "Everything she does is wonderful, this woman has so much ability." - Robert Oremann, Music Row Magazine.Karen was classically trained at the Bryn Mawr Conservatory of Music in her home state of Pennsylvania. She started singing professionally upon moving to San Francisco and ended up her stint there as a featured vocalist on the last Hot Tuna album. Shortly after moving to Los Angeles, Karen was signed to a recording contract by Clive Davis of Arista Records. Taking time off to raise her two daughters, her song writing flourished. As her love for the music business prevailed, she started writing country songs stylistically influenced by the legendary Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers. After forming the duo, Crazy Hearts (country's Fleetwood Mac), they were immediately asked to contribute a cut to the "Town ...
